No, not that kind. Get out of the gutter. I am getting a whine/hum from the rear end that is getting progressively louder. It is most noticeable at speeds of 50+ and is only present if you're under power. If I let off the gas and coast, it goes away. From what I have read, this is most likely caused by a problem in the rear diff (ring and pinion I believe). As y'all may remember, we checked the fluid in AL and while it was dark, it seemed to be full. So, my question is, what is the most likely culprit? Will a fluid change solve anything or once it starts to whine is it just fubarred? As far as repair, can it be repaired (and could it be something I do myself) or would it be best to replace the rear end? Looks like Indy4x may have parts for about $250, that is if I'm looking at the correct thing. Thanks Guys... |

Dan, that's a very uncommon problem for the 12 bolt rear end, but yes if it's whining it's wearing out and the fact that it's getting progressively worse tells you that its days are numbered. Changing the oil my help, but it's not going to "fix it". Lucky for you it's an easy fix and since those rear ends almost never go bad there are plenty of good replacement parts. All you need to do is change the pumpkin and that only takes about an hour. I've got one here that only has 155k on it and I'd be happy to sell it to you and even help you install it if we can get to the same place at the same time. They're not all that expensive to ship, probably $50 from my place to yours. If you decided you wanted to do it yourself you could, I could make a quick video going over the procedure or if you felt like you'd like a hand you could probably get Colin to help you with it or he'd probably do it for you if you didn't want to mess with it. You've got a lot of choices and as always I'll do whatever you need me to, just let me know. |

Johnny, that would be awesome (the video and the pumpkin). I'm sure I can probably swap it out pretty easily myself. How about we'll talk about price when I call you this week in regards to the block? I can then pick it up when I meet up with you to swap for the Amigo.

I just fixed a Forerunner with the same symptoms. It was the axle bearings. The seals were blown also. 2 cents. |

If you are swapping third members, go ahead and swap axle bearings. they will have to be pressed off and then new ones pressed on. Make sure you check your axle shafts good also. |

I've never replaced and axle bearing, did it go out or did you just do it for good measure? |
