Well shit. Went out and started the beast to warm it up. It started rough as it has for weeks now. I assumed it was because of the cold snap. It would fire up fine but then idle roughly. I could coax it out of that "phase" by feathering the gas and it would smooth out and run fine. As it was idling roughly, light blue smoke was coming out of the tail pipe. I smelled like burned fuel. This evening when I started her, I could not feather away the rough idle so I let her sit. I came back out a few minutes later and she was off. I cranked her. She started and shut off. I let her sit a while cranked her and she started and shut off. Further cranking yielded no start. So, I jumpered out the fuel pump relay, turned the key, and listened to the fuel pump humming along just fine. I put all the relays back and tried again. She fired and shut down. I then pulled the fuel pump relay and squeezed the socket that I had jumpered back together a bit and replaced the relay. She started and ran, albeit roughly. I pulled the plug wires as she was running and it appears as thought the front 2 have no spark, the back 2 do. I let her warm up a bit and she smoothed out some. I actually went to the store and got cigs - 5 miles - and she runs fine as long as your foot is on the gas. Let up and sometimes it feels like a miss, other times it runs fine without a load. Something is getting ready to let go. I'd like to have a little heads up. Any suggestions? She's sat for about 30 minutes now. I'm going out to see what happens. John and I had discussed replacing the coolant temp sensor. Looks like I need a warm day to get that done soon. Not sure that would cause all these troubles though. Took a whole bunch of cranks to fire then ran rough and blew that fuel smelling smoke out the pipe. Something is not firing right. Edited by zudorf, Dec 1 2013, 06:06 PM.

Loose tips on spark plugs perhaps? |

I'm going to put new wires on tomorrow provided I can make it to town. The other thing I was considering was swapping out the distributor thinking maybe the pick up coil is going. It sounds like something electrical though. That would explain the semi-burned fuel smell and smoke. I just need to put a carburetor on the damned thing. Then I would know exactly which path to take. |

Thanks, dude. I'll check it out. Yeah, trying not to burn bridges over there. There's still a wealth of information to be had. |

It doesn't say exactly what fixed the problem. I was going to swap the distributor anyway. I'll run out now with a flash light and check that EGR tube as that was the last post he made before the "it's alive" post. |

OK. EGR tube in tact. No vacuum leaks. I have spark on all cylinders but still idling rough. I'm going to replace the distributor tomorrow if for nothing other than to rule it out. I'll do the plugs, wires, cap, and button. She could use a tune-up anyway. I should be able to deduce something from the state of the plugs. Back in September when John came through, I explained some symptoms I was having at the time. He spent the better part of his trip home texting me explaining why he thought I was getting ready to lose the bottom end of my engine. I'm wondering if the symptoms I'm experiencing now are part of that scenario. Looks like Tim's getting a cherry 86 to drive while he carburates and tweaks this one! Now I need to find $1000.00 lying around somewhere. |

Looks like we'll both be putting new bottom ends on together Tim. I got Johnny working on mine right now, pick it up in February. Putting in a Delta 272, new cooling system and clutch while I'm at it. Probably a new diff as well. Weber 38/38 at the next meet. Edited by Gen1Trooper_Jax, Dec 1 2013, 07:03 PM.
