Ernie, What are the specs of the radiator in Red? It's obviously not stock, but was it made for a first-gen Trooper, or is it intended to be used in other vehicles? I'm asking because I'm thinking of getting another one and would like to know where you got this one. Wife's silver Trooper ("Phantom") is running too hot, even after a flush, and I suspect it may be due to being bored .020 over, in addition to a bunch of the fins mashed sideways, restricting airflow. I also suspect the transmission cooler portion of her radiator may be blocked somehow, preventing the free flow of fluid, thus causing it to overheat as well. I changed out the fluid in the tranny and transfer case on hers, and while it shifts and runs fine, I'm still not comfortable with how hot it's getting (3/4 of the way up the gauge), and I don't want to have to rebuild a head again anytime soon, at least not on hers. So, I swapped radiators, just to see what happened. Double checked the transmission cooler connections, and lo-and-behold...temp doesn't climb past 1/3 at all. WOOT! We'll see tomorrow what happens when I drive it to work, but looks like I may have a solution. Are the trans cooler connections "directional"? (Are they designed to be hooked up a certain way, i.e. front connector on the transmission to the shorter pipe?) I didn't think it mattered, but I could be wrong. |

There is no check valve in there so it should go either way. The radiator in Red is an aftermarket brand I bought locally but it was supposedely a direct replacement (or as close as you'll get) I replaced it when I put in a new water pump.
