![]() ![]() Once pushed to the brink by the campaigns of Naga Sadow during the Great Hyperspace War, the Republic was saved both by Jedi intervention and treason within the Sith ranks, thus marking the ascendancy of Force Users to the forefront of all later galactic conflicts. Although the Jedi's presence and power within the Republic greatly increased – as they were officially recognized by the Senate and granted sacred land on the Republic capital of Coruscant to use as a temple and refuge – their new status also made them a larger target. Across the millennium to come weaker Jedi were seduced by the ways of the Sith drawn in by the spirits of Lords of ages past, and by the allure of contemporary Dark Side cults. Only a mere few years ago the actions of these fallen Jedi – most prominently Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma – culminated in a crisis too dire for the Republic to handle, leading to the formation of a reborn Sith Empire and the beginning of the Great Sith War. With the Republic still reeling from the last galactic conflict, it was brought to its knees by the combined forces of Kun's Sith, Qel-Droma's Krath cult, the Mecrosa Order, and the Mandalorians. The Jedi themselves fared little better on the front lines, as the Sith used ancient weapons of Naga Sadow's invention to devastating effect, specifically targeting Jedi to kill or turn to the Dark Side. As the Order's power waned, the Sith Empire grew ever stronger, until it seemed unstoppable. Ossus was sacked, and the Supreme Chancellor put to death in front of the Republic Senate. However, just when all seemed lost, Ulic Qel-Droma rejoined the order, bringing with him valuable tactical information that allowed the Republic to launch a counterattack at the heart of the Empire's forces, slaying Mandalore on Onderon and Exar Kun himself on Yavin 4. The Great Sith War ended, and many of the systems which had fallen in line with the Sith were brought back into the fold. However, this victory was only bought at a very steep price. The Jedi Order is but a shadow of its former self, with many of its knights and masters slain during the bloody conflict, and many of its students lured astray. The Republic has sustained tremendous damage to its infrastructure, with countless soldiers lost in hard-fought campaigns, and many worlds thoroughly devastated by the war. With the thin Jedi population occupied with chasing down the equally scattered Sith, lesser threats such as crime syndicates, disenfranchised mercenaries, and civilian uprisings slip through the hands of the Senate and its emaciated army. Many worlds in the Outer Rim have already begun to fall away from Republic administration, back into the hands of various frontier warlords and magnates. Crime is at an all time high, and a portion of the Republic senate is close to reaching the peak of desperation, agitating for repressions in stead of reparations. Between corruption of the law, the disappearance of most of the Jedi, and the Republic's slow spiral into decay from within, there are those who fear that the entire galaxy will fracture, splitting into countless independent states. And, there are also those, both amongst the Jedi and the people, who wonder if maybe, things might have been better under the stronger rule of the Sith... |
