"You are a good friend. Are you also a good friend of the good people?" —Kirk HalcyonSubject: Kirk Halcyon Dossier:
The records pertaining to Kirk Halcyon's life prior to his acquisition as a recruit of the Jedi Order are unknown, presumed lost in the numerous databank destructions that took place in the time of strife during which he was trained. Reports from individual Jedi Masters on the youthful Halcyon's aptitude in classes, few though they were during the turbulent period of his instruction, appear to suggest that the boy was bright albeit misguided. The general tendency of Kirk's studies was underperformance and a preoccupation with the war effort against the enemies of the Order. The only subjects the boy seemed to display any excellency in were in battle training and galactic politics. His apprenticeship under the Selkath Jedi Master Rokal Gul was considered uneventful, the relationship between master and student little more than a partnership between two Jedi whose only occupying interest was their service to the war against the Sith. The padawan Halcyon's subsequent Trials of Knighthood passed without incident. The lack of more specific reports suggest that there was no distinction and that they were rushed in order to service the Jedi front line with fresh officers.
When Kirk Halcyon first tasted battle, however, the recalcitrant student appeared to show his true colours. Field reports from numerous Jedi Masters at the time - most notable among them Battlemaster Wei Ran - speak to the strength and endurance of the greenhorn Knight in the face of adversity and his willingness to confront difficult situations. All sources seem to agree that Halcyon was a skilled fighter who never shirked from responsibility and battled with a war born zeal uncommon to many of his ilk in the period. His party of Jedi combatants was seemingly a force to be reckoned with and he was directly involved in countless successful raids on marauding Sith in addition to his contributions in the major battles scouring every theatre of the war.
His exploits on the field effectively earned him the title of Battlemaster de facto, a christening which would later stick and become canon despite its use being unusual to describe Jedi that weren't yet fully fledged Masters. Nonetheless, Halcyon was responsible for almost all combat instruction in his Order after 1639 BBY. Just prior to that, a major personal conflict affected Kirk's psyche and attitude to the strife against the Sith; his comrade and occasional mentor, fellow Battlemaster Tyrul Virilium, became disillusioned and increasingly embittered by the seeming futility of the war. Virilium's subsequent fall to the dark side and betrayal of the Jedi that climaxed in the notorious slaughter at the Battle of Malrev IV weighed heavily on Halcyon's conscience. The disgraced Battlemaster had given in to hatred after a gruelling siege and murdered scores of captive darksiders, a grave trespass against the Jedi Code. A military tribunal led by Master Yron Raun decreed Tyrul unfit for duty - Halcyon would be made responsible for the task force that would bring him in. Called away to assist in a direct engagement in the Sith Temple just as his squad of Jedi Knights cornered the fallen Battlemaster, Kirk would eventually return to find his comrades' corpses. The event shook Halcyon, destroying much of the youthful Battlemaster's enthusiasm and driving him inexorably towards rank-and-file militarism and the singular aim of conquest.
The majority of Jedi historians of our era believe it likely that Kirk Halcyon was slain in battle during this period - it is my enduring belief, however, that there is a core of truth in the folklore that claims he didn't die on the frontline. However, following the showdown that occurred in the latter stages of Halcyon's career, everything becomes speculation - so much was lost. So much data. So many lives.
