IMPERIAL ARMY

During the time of Darian Magnus and his immediate successors, the legions of the Imperium were unmatched in their army tradition and discipline. Their prowess and uniformity brought the entire continent of Avanor to heel, inspiring fear and respect alike in the hearts of their enemies and conquered peoples. Unfortunately, as with all things, the prestige of the Army faded. Their are many root caused defined by a score of scholars, but the most agreed upon are the failure of the military aristocracy to adapt to changing tactics, successive civil wars, and the break down of central authority. With the rise of feudalism and the empowerment of local lords, a legion became a mere conglomeration of levies provided by lords who heeded the call to arms. While this lead to a diversification of different units that could be incorporated into a force (such as Volkish hussars of Antivan battlemages), the days of Darian Magnus' legionaries are gone.

Despite this, the Imperial Army's efficient bureaucracy has remained, many offices granted and revoked at will in accordance to their merit -- a system that exists in stark contrast to what the Army is today. Their are murmurs throughout the ranks that desire a return to the old ways, a sort of military renaissance that wishes to apply new theory to the discipline and traditions of yore.
