I got a photo with Iwan Rheon and saw his panel, another panel with Kate Dickie (Lysa Arryn) and one with Mace Tyrell (I'm too tired to look up his name right now). I also went to a panel on the lesser houses of Westeros (I was pushing House Tarth but they picked House Tarly to talk about - boo!) and one discussing the end game. Everyone has been very knowledgeable and the audiences have been enthusiastic so it's been good so far. I want to say there are maybe 3000-4000 people here, which I think is great for a first year convention. Lots of cosplay, there were quite a few Jon Snows, Danys, and Sansas. Did not see any Jaime or Brienne cosplays but I'm sure they were out there. It's super nerdy but everyone is into it and it's fun to talk to random people about GoT, even if you don't agree with them. There are older people here (like people in their 60s) which I never see at a con. Tomorrow I'll be wearing my House Tarth shirt. |

Will do! A lot of the stuff we talk about on this board would be right at home as a panel here. Yesterday I talked to a woman who is going to be on a fan fiction and also a shipping panel, and when I asked who she shipped she said Tormund and Brienne Hopefully someone else on the panel will stick up for Jaime/Brienne! |

I blame GRRM too for this wide-spread BT delusion, it's not only D&D not casting Hyle and giving that role to a beloved character that all Starkists root for -obviously there was a reason why GRRM created such a character for the role and didn't use an existing character on the side of the main protagonists-, it's also GRRM not finishing the books on time...even people who know that BT doesn't exist in the books think that it can happen in the show because they can't see JB happening in the books. If GRRM had made JB canon on time, this BT idiocy wouldn't happen. I understand casual fans being fooled by BT hype but people who go to conventions rooting for this red herring are the worst. How did you reply to her Deb? Edited by Andi, Jul 1 2017, 07:02 AM.

Andi, I said Jaime/Brienne was my jam, and other people there agreed with me . I figured there's no sense arguing with someone's opinion, especially when I know their ship isn't going anywhere! Season 7 will dash their hopes anyway...

Good on you for taking the high road Deb. People can be wrong in their shipping but cool in other ways. You sound like you're having a ball. I've been to that hotel in Nashville before. The atmosphere sorta has a Disneyworld or I guess in this case a Water Gardens of Dorne-like vibe to it. Do they have the boat ride going?

They do have the boat ride! I saw people on the river today. The hotel is crazy, it's huge and we keep getting lost! Today was another busy day but also fun. I'm exhausted but I'll write about what I saw tomorrow morning. |

Ok, I managed to get some sleep! I attended lots of panels yesterday. The first panel I went to was with the sound designer, Paula Fairfield. She has been the sound designer since season three. She does all the effects of things that don't exist in our world, like the dragons, dire wolves and white walkers. She said as opposed to other TV series, she gets all the episodes of each season at once, although it's before most of the visual effects are in so she gets a chance to go through the season as a whole to plot out the arcs of what she is doing. She was super, super excited about this season and while she gave us a couple of minor spoilers, which I will report in the spoiler topic, she didn't tell us anything. She did say that each season keeps getting better. She doesn't use synthetic sounds for anything she does, which I thought was interesting. She said she puts something personal in each of her scenes because she wants to bring some emotion into her work. She puts all her sounds in and the someone else from post production figures out how to layer that with the music. She was really interesting, and it was probably the best panel I saw yesterday. The next panel was on Motherhood. Kate Dickie (Lysa) was there with 3 women - Sue the Fury and Vanessa from Watchers and Laura Stone from another website. Nothing too novel came out of it. They talked about Lysa and Cersei and Dany mostly. Next panel was Paula Fairfield again with David Peterson, who does all the languages. This was also an interesting panel. David talked about the differences between high valarian and low valarian and they both talked about the scene where Dany hands over Drogon to get the unsullied army and how they approached it. One thing that was touching is that he said he had a cat who used to sit with him while he was working, and when he died he made his cat's name the Dothraki word for friend. He said he got the job basically through a contest where they asked language people to create the Dothraki dialogue for season one, he did that and also included 300 pages on the whole language. He said George RR Martin understands how the languages are put together so he doesn't help him that much with that when George is writing. |

I'm writing on my phone so that window was getting too long. Next panel was Watchers on the Wall podcast. They went through the latest trailer and talked about it. Nothing new that we haven't talked about here. One thing that was cool was that someone brought up Jaime and Brienne and some people clapped! Axey and Luka from Watchers are both Jaimie/Brienne shippers! Next was the Ghost of Winterfell panels - so it was all the actors that had died and who was at the con - Iwan Rheon, Kate Dickie, Kerry Ingram, Sam Coleman (young Hodor), Miltos (Syrio Forel), Roger Ashton-Griffiths (Mace Tyrell). They asked them if they remembered their last line, that was fun. And who they would want to die next, Kate said Sweet Robin and Kerry said Melasandre and Aimee said Cersei! Next was the panel with Aimee Richardson and Kerry Ingram. Kerry said Liam Cunningham is Dragonstone, great to work with and super humble. Aimee said Lena Headey loved to tease Nik about looking like Prince Charming from Shrek. Aimee and Kerry are still friends and hang out with Isaac. The girls had crushes on Richard Madden and Thomas Brody Sangster. We went to R+J = Discussion where people talked about theories on when Jon will find out about his parentage and what will happen. We left trivia because they made you actually participate and we thought we couldn't help that much. All in all, a good day! |

Ok, I'm at the airport waiting for my flight home, here's my recap for the last day of the con! First I went to a special panel for the VIP passes, it had David Peterson the language guy, Aimee Richardson, Miltos (Syrio Fidel), Sam Coleman (Young Hodor), and Rupert Vansitart (Yorn Royce - I honestly had no idea who he was but he's some Vale person). The panel was fun, lots of jokes. No real details came out of this. We then went to the Rupert panel - did you know he was in Four Weddings and a Funeral and also Pride and Prejudice (the miniseries with Colin Firth)? I had no idea. He said working on Game of Thrones (or Thrones as they all seem to call it) is fun but a lot of work. He said that during the King of the North scene at the end of last season, he realized all the Vale people had Northern accents while he has always been using his regular London accent - whoops! He decided that his parents wanted Royce to be upwardly mobile. He said, like all the other people did, that Dan and David are super committed and very respectful to everyone. The next panel was a Sansa discussion. Neither me nor my friend are big fans of Sansa but the other choices were worse so we just stayed where we were. Nothing too exciting came from this, some people really like Sansa but many hate her. Next was a San Coleman panel. He seemed like a really nice and genuine guy. He said he auditioned for a role on Game of Thrones that just read Large stable boy, age 10-12. He was 18 at the time and sat in the waiting room with a bunch of 12 year olds! He said that he didn't care because he was a big fan of Game of Thrones and wanted to at least say he auditioned for it. And said it might have helped that he thought he had no chance because he did well. A week later, he found out he got the part and didn't even have to audition again. He also didn't know he was playing hodor until he went to wardrobe and someone said something about the older Hodor wearing something. The dying part of the script was blacked out so he didn't even know that Hodor died until he watched the show! |

Miltos' panel was next. Some people got to go to a water dance class with him but I didn't get a ticket. He says he learned all the sword stuff with a sword guy and then he went to Belfast and taught Maisie so it would be more realistic. He said the scene where he puts his sword on his hand wasn't anything he ever practiced and got it on the first take. He said that he is invested in Arya's journey and that when she was on the bridge last season and that woman came up to her, he was screaming at his tv, "Didn't I teach you anything at all? Don't trust her!" And that George rr Martin deliberately kept his death ambiguous. The last panel we went to was Villians and scoundrels, it was fun but nothing new came out of it. We did high five Sam Coleman as he was walking to the vendor area. im boarding, but that's pretty much it. It was fun to spend the weekend with other Got fans. It sounds like they will be doing it next year! |

Huh, that's...odd that Miltos mentioned what GRRM intended. I wonder if that's his own interpretation or if he actually had some "insider" info from GRRM. |

Sounds like the feedback on the con is mixed. I didn't have high expectations since this was the first year of the con, but I enjoyed it. I don't know if people were expecting personal meet and greets with all the lead stars of the show or something, but it wasn't what the organizers ever said was going to happen. Other people said they learned nothing new in the panels, but my personal opinion is that those people read Reddit or something and how much can you really discuss things in depth? I can see how people were disappointed with the vendors, it was pretty sparse. I also didn't go to the pub crawl or the dance so maybe those weren't great either. I would think about going back. One of the biggest takeaways is how Dragonstone Kate Dickie is - she is so endearing and was so friendly and her panel was great. She also has a great Scottish accent. Who knew bat-shit crazy Lysa Arryn would be so cool? |

George likes to leave the door open for even more narrative detours. I wouldn't have had expectations for the Con either. It takes a while to actually get some legitimacy with agents and possible presenters. For the first year, they did incredibly well. Even SDCC doesn't get all the main cast. I would have been disappointed by panels with just tumblr fans or people who run websites. They don't have any insight they haven't already shared. I would prefer to meet the lighting director or seamstress number four rather than a panel with Poorquentyn and Sue the Fury. |

I would pay to here Seamstress #4! In fact, I would be incredibly excited to see/hear from any production department. Hopefully there can be more of this type of guess in future cons. |
