Summary: This article shows you an easy way rip and convert DVD ISO to WD TV supported video for moving to WD TV for easier playback.

WD TV, a common Media Player for us, is compatible with a wide selection of multimedia files, including most image, audio and video file formats, such as AVI, MPG, MP4 and MKV movie files and MP3 audio files. I own a WD TV, what I want to do is to transfer my DVD ISO files to WD TV for playing. The problem is that most DVD ISO files work for me, but a few say unsupported format.

After getting some tech support form WD TV forum, I know the difference between the ISOs that work and the ones that give an "unsupported format" error could easily be due to the size difference. For whatever reason, the WD TV Gen1 doesn't play ISOs that are less than about 30 minutes which is a common length for TV episodes. Maybe if we bring it up enough, it'll get fixed. The workaround seems to be to use an MKV container instead of an ISO container. In other words, we’d better convert DVD ISO to MKV for WD TV easier playback. By the way, if you have a pile of DVD discs, you’d better rip DVD movie off disc and convert to WD TV compatible format in advance.
