LucasArts has confirmed to IGN the company issued layoff notices today.

A spokesperson would not comment on the number of employees let go, but an unconfirmed report from Kotaku suggests over 30% of the studio was shown the door.

"LucasArts is reorganizing its teams to better address the needs of the internal studio. Unfortunately, this means adjusting staffing," a company representative said.

"LucasArts continues to be committed to creating a first-class internal studio – and to fostering relationships with trusted external partners – in order to deliver quality games that amaze and inspire fans."

The company has been the center of attention the past few months. Paul Meegan replaced Darrell Rodriguez as president of the company in June, and Force Unleashed II producer Haden Blackman resigned in late July.

In August, former Ubisoft Montreal creative director Clint Hocking joined LucasArts to develop an unannounced project.

It seems that the restructuring of LA is becoming a bit extreme...

I'm not sure what to think of this. Thirty percent of the company is a lot of people.

On the one hand, this is a good thing. On the other, it could get far worse.

wow!

It looks like LA has some serious issues... 30%?! They need those employees, unless they were just sitting on their ass demanding money.

Well, I guess this is good... but I still don't trust them.

Well, it sounds to me like they're clearing house so they can hire some actual talent, since they apparently want to develop everything in house again. At the moment they just lack the staff... but it does make you wonder what they were paying these people to do before.

And also, who they would consider "talented"...

It sounds to me like LucasArts is falling apart, but I'll have to wait a couple years to see if they keep falling farther or if they actually start making some good games.

I hope it's the 30% that didn't want to make KOTOR III.

LucasArts announced even more incoming layoffs today:

IGN

Layoffs around the industry continue to ramp up as the year comes to a close. This morning, Activision announced it's looking to potentially sell Bizarre Creations, and now LucasArts confirmed it also made a round of cuts today.

"LucasArts recently made a minor adjustment in staffing to help us better address the needs of the business," a spokesperson said in a statement given to IGN.

"We remain committed to our internal studio – and to fostering relationships with trusted external partners – in order to deliver quality games that amaze and inspire fans."

LucasArts would not confirm the number of employees let go in total, but did say today's moves will not impact current or future projects.

The company last released The Force Unleashed 2 in October.

I really would like to know what exactly LucasArts' strategy for this generation is...

EDIT: I just noticed the following line:

Quote:

"We remain committed to our internal studio – and to fostering relationships with trusted external partners – in order to deliver quality games that amaze and inspire fans."

I thought LA was moving towards developing everything in-house. Why would they be "fostering relationships" with external studios?

I'm going to quote Pixiebutt over at Kotaku.

Pixiebutt

*sigh*

I feel genuinely sorry for LucasArts, I really do. They are just so goddamned clueless as to what to do to make a video game that customers want.
