The director of The Empire Strikes Back has died. He was 87 years old. Best remembered as the director of one of the greatest sequels of all time, Kershner also directed the unauthorized Thunderball remake, Never Say Never Again as well as Robocop 2.

But it's for his time in the Star Wars universe that has endeared him to fans across the planet. Tasked with following the biggest smash hit since Gone With The Wind, Kershner worked with Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas to explore the characters in a more intimate way, giving them added depth in the face of the constant threat of the Empire and the ultimate destiny of the hero who would learn to discover an awful truth.

Kershner helped to turn a fantasy adventure into a character study while managing to expand on the sense of magic and wonder first presented in the first film.

Rest in Peace sir, the Force will be with you. Always.

Sad news.

A big thank you to Kersh for directing arguably the best Star Wars film.

I was just reading a history of the Star Wars films last week. Kershner really is the one man behind Empire - and probably the reason Lucas never worked with anyone who disagreed with him ever again.

And I just watched The Empire Strikes Back yesterday (no joke).

The man truly did direct one of the worlds greatest movies to date and I was indeed shocked when I read this

You know, I always feel like this guy didn't receive nearly as much notice as he deserved. He produced what is easily the best of the Star Wars films, and, from what JC said, was the true genius behind the process. Seems Lucas kind of overshadowed him.

Still, he will be missed. I salute him for his contributions Star Wars and moviemaking in general. Without him, who knows what the original trilogy would be like?

I agree with bman999. Of course George Lucas deserves credit for creating the characters and the universe and writing the story, but I don't think Kershner got enough praise for directing such an awesome movie. I think I'll watch ESB tonight in his honor. May he rest in peace.

Yeah... I'd quote the book I read if I had it with me, but basically it was Kershner vs Lucas the whole time; Kershner wanted everyone to take their time, get the best performances from the actors, slowing down the film and focusing more on emotion and character rather than pure visuals, while Lucas was only concerned about finishing the film as quickly and cheaply as possible. To be fair to Lucas, he didn't particularly want to do Star Wars sequels at the time (his intention being to manage things from behind the scenes), and because he invested everything he earned with Star Wars into the sequel, he'd be broke even if Empire was a mediocre success).

The film ended up the way it did because Kasdan and Kurtz both sided with Kershner, and Lucas was back at home the whole time, thinking he could just phone it in and everyone would do what he said. Lucas later said if he had his way, the film wouldn't be as good, but it wouldn't have made much of a difference - maybe to him, I think.

Because we all know how well that worked. Even Lucas should've known this is the greatest of the bunch, if he'd just listen to the fans.
