![]() Okay guys, my card post for the evening is Prickleback. What's everyones opinion on him? I'm kind of torn. I love the fact that Nature has a turn one play now. However, in some test hands, whenever I draw this card I almost always wish it was something different. I'm having a hard time pin-pointing exactly what his role in a deck is going to be. I'm not the type to play something just to have more evo-bait - so a turn one play that has to wait til turn 2 to attack, and then return... not so sure. Especially with the multiple level 1 2000 blockers that are out. I'd like to get some more testing in with him, however, I'm starting to lean away from him in my current nature deck. |

This guy is more for a nature-based rush deck than simply Beast-Kin aggro which I believe you are playing. Darkness/Fire Rush decks run Marrow Ooze just because he is a one drop and will off a free sheild against an unsuspecting opponent. Prickleback is leagues above Ooze. First off with the other rush 1-drops you just lost to Thunder Cruiser and the gang. End of story. At least Prickleback can trade with them. Well what's that you say? Why would you block when the creature essentially offs himself? Well, now unlike Marrow Ooze where I traded a resource forever, I still get the resource back. The thing about rush is that it runs out of cards really fast, and Prickleback helps mitigate that. For example, in the progression from turn 1 to turn 2, assuming perfect curve, I end up with a hand of 2. With Prickleback my hand is at 3, even if I lose a creature on the field for it. Now that we have reached a stage in the game where the 1-drops are not as good, you can play it in your mana zone instead of say the 3 or 4-drops you want to be casting. God knows how many times I had to play Gilaflame into mana to support my curve. Now instead I can use Prickleback for that purpose. Yes, he's aweful off the top, but that is a weakness of the rush archetype and not the card itself. So he's good in rush, don't mistake that. In a sort of beast kin ramp shell? Yeah, you might not want him. |

While I support what you're saying that he's superior to most 1-drops for Rush, Logic, he's not just a replacement mana card for your curve and in some ways, in Beast Kin decks, he makes for the quick Evo summon that could swiftly change the tides of a game. For instance, being that Prickleback is level 1, he's the cheapest instance drop to evolve creature for them, making him relevant to suddenly bring a Bronze-Arm Sabertooth or Flamespike Tatsurion onto the board as a big threat (more so the Sabertooth as Prickleback will serve his purpose and become part of your mana curve afterward.) Yes, I agree. After a few turns, Prickleback will become useless against higher level creatures but that one turn where you can hit a shield and bounce him makes him worth it, synergy-wise late game. |

Agreed with everything said about Prickleback so far. I'll add that for rush that are using [card]SkyCrusher's Elite[/card] this guy can become another harder to target creature like Gilaflame is. I liked the flavor this card had in Duelmasters as Hearty Cap'n Polligon more than this Kaijudo version but I am glad that this one is a beast kin because they are much better than Snow Faeries in my opinion. |
