Same here. I was prepared for the angsty tween treatment for the movie reboot, I wasn't prepared for...for that. But enough sadness. We should rejoice in spidery celebration.

What's wrong with the reboot? They pretty much followed the comic books 95%, rather than having the movie be too different to be called spider man o.o

Peter Parker, as played by Michael Cera doing a James Dean impression, for starters. But that's just on the surface. To really explain how deeply this film offends me i need to do some plinkett-level analses. But it boils down to a gross misunderstanding of peter parker's character. He spends a big part of the movie being a bully; far longer than necessary to drive the point home that he is indeed abusing his powers. Even when he learns to look beyond himself and learn that "power something something responsibility"(god bless you uncle ben you were the best thing in the whole movie), he still goes back on his promise to captain stacy in what has to be the most teeth-grindingly infuriating piece of dialogue I've ever heard come out of a character's mouth. Since I know we're not above comparing reboots to earlier incarnations, I have to say that the story of Amazing Spiderman was better when it was told in Spiderman. In amazing, peter parker has to come to terms with his identity, learning what to do with his powers, his anger over his uncle's death, his feelings for gwen stacy, and that being with her puts her at risk. In the raimi films, these things were spread out over two films and were given their proper time to unfold. In amazing it's condensed into the action movie cliffnotes version of each plotline, and making it all the worse is the poor direction Andrew Garfield is given. His Parker is a sullen, but charming mumbly twit who's self- absorbed to a fault, but really wants to do the right thing. however, all the other characters in the story talk to and react to him as if it's Tobey McGuire's Parker on screen, and the dissonance is palpable. More than anything, the romance is hurt by the processed nature of the movie. The two characters like each other immediately, and there's no obstacle to their feelings for each other. This is made even worse by the fact that he reveals himself to her(already?!). But wait, her father doesn't approve of him, right? there's the conflict, in the relationship; an outside source, one that has nothing to do with their relationship, but rather something that poses a threat to it. Reducing a character to little more than a roadblock for a romance is pretty terrible already, but later on he proved to also be a roadblock for spidey getting to the evil macguffin. gosh i'm trying to keep this concise, but the more i talk about this film, the more problems i'm reminded it has. I think it'd be easier just to link to hulk smash, but that review's even longer. Edited by Scythewielder, Mar 1 2013, 03:50 AM.

Still...no Spider-Man 3. Amazing does suffer some of the same pacing problems that Spider-Man 3 had, but it has those primarily because it had to assume its own identity. It couldn't be an exact carbon copy of the 2002 movie so it had to dobthings a little differently. Plus it was written full well with sequels in mind. It gas potential, was it as good as Spidey 1 or 2? NO!!! But that potential is there |

Oh i'm not going to pretend it's a worse film than 3. Definitely not. but it's difficult for me not to see it as the DmC to 3's...4. Difference being that in DMC 4 you could still have fun with the intense combat, while in Spidey's case, the whole project was doomed to fail because of the lording studio execs kept rushing things(and adding things that didn't need to be there). Spidey 3 could've been good too...by doing one simple thing...splitting it up. Think about it 3 could've been Sandman and the symbiote costume, giving Sandman decent time as well as expanding his story. 4 would've been all Venom, simply because Venom deserves NOTHING less than his own movie |

I didn't really thing Sandman could carry a movie, but Thomas Haden Church really wowed me. And the last thing I saw him in was George of the Jungle, in which he played prima donna rich kid. As much of a staple of Spiderman canon as Venom is, I really think this was more Flint's story. I think it would have been a hell of a thing for the audience's loyalties to slowly but surely shift to the side of the villain as the symbiote took hold, and for that to come to a head with Peter going a little too far, and instead of a big action movie punch up, everyone gets an emotional kick in the stomach when they realize their hero's fallen from grace, Pete's become the thing he most hates, and Flint's spirit is deeply wounded. I think the image of peter physically and mentally battling the suit and sheer agony it takes to remove it would have been a much better and fitting climax to the film. After all, the tagline was "the battle within". |

That was what I'm saying that could've done both. Expand on Sandman and the suit and how it changed Parker, then end with Brock getting the suit. 4 would've been the fan wet dream. Parker trying to salvage everything while dealing with Venom. Also we could've written New Goblin out and saved it for 5. They crammed way to much into 3 |

Did OMD still happen? I haven't really followed comic books for a long time now and I'm curious if they've gotten around to retconning that yet. |
