Well, it's been a long dry spell for us.  Not only has the ranch been going through a draught the last 3 years but during that same time they have been conducting the aerial assaults on the swine population each February, so the hog numbers are the lowest I've ever seen in my 10 years on the ranch.  But hey, it's February and that means more helicopter shoots.   They start next week.   :-/

We haven't run the dogs since December and even then, the last four hunts proved fruitless.  We didn't even get on a hog, hardly saw any tracks or sign.  Very dissappointing.

We thought we'd get after them again today and see if we could locate at least one.  We have two young dogs that need to be on some pigs.  Rebel, whom we got from Kenneth Smith while we were in Tennessee for the fall hunt and Chance, the young male that was born here at our place last spring and we got back.

We had a great day to go, temps in the high 50's to low 60's all day, misting rain from time to time, complete cloud cover.  I'll take that anytime.

It didn't take the old dogs too long to find the first pig and it was a perfect start to the day and a great pig for the young dogs.  It only weighed about 40 lbs, was missing half of it's lower jaw, probably a wound inflicted during last years helicopter shoots.  The two youngsters ran to the bay and we could hear a caught hog before we got off the atvs.  They had it stretched out in this dry creek bed when we got there, no need for the catchdogs.  I got some quick video and I took a couple of pics before Emily went down and took care of it.

Short time later the dogs get on a group of at least 10 hogs, the bay is solid, dogs are baying, hogs are grunting.  Music to my ears, had almost forgot what it sounded like.  Both youngsters were in there and doing their part.  Turned catchdogs loose, both caught seperate pigs, we're running in, hogs attack both catchdogs while they are on their hogs.  All heck breaks loose, hogs split in every direction, Kemmers are going after them in all directions, two bulldogs are on the ground trying to get back on a pig.  LONG story short, we finally get everyone back on the atvs about an hour later, no hog to show for it.  They were a mile away, across two creeks, and by the time we got to them....NADA

We picked them up, relocated, turned them out again, and they got bayed on a small group.  We ended up getting two out of that group.  It was fast and furious on that one as well.  Chance caught his own pig, a small one.  The catchdogs singled out a 70 lb sow and the race was on.  They ran it about 200 yards to a wet creek with knee deep mud.  I was the only one able to get to the dogs and pig.  Emily got stuck up to the knees and had to wait there until I got the pig killed and the bulldogs on leashes.  Tracy was trying to help but was avoiding the mud.  I finally got the two bulldogs pulled out of the creek and tied to trees.  I was sucking some wind by this time, tried to catch my breath, then went to Emily and it took both Tracy and I to pull her and her boots free.  Did I mention she fell flat on her backside during all this?  Yep, covered in mud.

We called it a day after that and loaded 'em up.  Now, we're praying for fog or high winds next week to keep the helicoter grounded.

Good news was, we finally got on some hogs and both young dogs turned it on today.  They are a long way from being hogs dogs, but they both made a BIG step in that direction today.
Thanks Kenneth, Charles, and Skipper for these Kemmer dogs I currently run.

This hog is still alive, the Kemmers just have it stretched out.

Here's a few seconds of the video

Rebel has it by the nose.  Chance is wearing the red collar, no tracking collar

Great hunt Dee!! Impressive pack you have there. I know who Emily is but who is Tracy? I know u always mention Tracy but don't feel like I know who Tracy is.
Anyway....great pictures as always, and like the way you put the names to the dogs in the pictures.

That was a good start for him, now to keep him on pigs.

Tracy is my neighbor and has been hunting with me for a several years now. He doesn't own any dogs, just likes to go with me and have all the fun without the responsibilities of taking care of the dogs. The best of both worlds.

Thanks Dee. The best of both worlds for Tracy maybe....but also a perfect hunting partner for someone with a lot of dogs!!! LOL.
