I just woke up and went out to make sure the pups were alright. They are almost 2 weeks old.

I put a good bit of Straw in there last night, and have the opening of their house just big enough for momma to make it in, and also have a 1/8th inch thick piece of rubbber over it for a door. It has a new Shingled roof that I put on a few months ago. Well looks like my work and a good momma kept them fat and happy last night! I sure was relieved!!

When I build my dog coops I use 2" sheet insulation on four sides, top and bottom, wood chips on the bottom and a good helping of straw and dogs seem pretty comfortable. Not that we get as cold here as other parts of NY, maybe afew days of 20 below plus all the snow helps insulate but I still wouldn't want pups welped outside here.
What's the blood in those pups and good luck with them.

Thomas, my buddy raises bird dogs. He sales some pups for $1,000 each so he can't afford to loose any. He uses a heating pad which is a hard plastic pad that has a heating element. The wire is metal rapped to prevent chewing. He uses no straw, the pups lay on middle of heating pad and stay toasty in the coldest weather.

You northern boys need to look into these for these special pups.

Hey TURBO,,,

It is so cold up here that it will not even register on the thermometer on the porch....Roger has his own designer thermal underwear along with matching outfit for all of puppies and other animals on the farm...we are the only one here in the state of WV that people drive for miles around to see the animals instead of the christmas tree lights...lol......He even goes as far as having their own line of stockings, doggies undergarments and little ear muffs...Now if you believe that I will sell you some ocean front property in west virginia....

But really, I like to tell little stories,,,it sounds great about that heating pads in this area but usually what Roger does,,he takes a 125 watt flood light bulb, put in dog bed with one of those reflectors like you would use for baby chicks. That works good for him up here, but you have to fix it up high enough so the dogs do not chew any wiring...Roger's son went to Southern States CO-OP and bought three water buckets made with heaters in the bottom and all he has to do is plug them up and it keeps their water unthawed in the buckets for the dogs...no matter how cold it gets...this has just amazed roger....so imagine when I tell him about the heating pads.....he will flip & I will have to go and hide the check book....lots of laugh...your friend  kimmy
