Seems abit slow around here with the heat no seasons being open yet so thought I would throw something out there just for the fun. What are your favorite shootin irons, here are a few of mine. They include a custom 25-06, custom 308, ( both built on mauser actions), a remington 581,(most accurate rimfire I have ever owned), savage single shot with accutrigger, ruger mark II semi auto, of course, I have several shotguns, quite a few other handguns, 2 muzzleloaders, and about half a dozen other 22 rifles but the 581 remmy sees most of the woods time. Thx, JJ |

Well.........I'm kind of a Ruger fan. I use a 77/22 bolt action blue barrel walnut stock with Simmons 4-12x40AO scope for squirrels. Used it for coon also for years till I got a 10/22auto blue barrel birch stock with 4-12x40Elite3200. I put a Wilson sporter barrel on it. Shoots as good as bolt action with Super x ammo. Wilson barrel is slim in diameter. Not a fan of those big fat target barrels for hunting. Used bolt action Mossburg shotguns for hunting rabbits for years. They always got the job done for me. Was more interested in the quality of the Beagles I used to run than the kind gun I carried. |

I too, use a Remington 581 to squirrel and coon hunt with. They must be good rifles because this is the most accurate rifle I have ever used. Mine is a bolt action with a scope. |

Loyd, I have had 3 of them so far. Well, one was the 541 but they are the same gun, just abit more polished with a better grade of wood. All 3 of them would cut bullet holes at 50 yards with about any type of ammo you feed them. I always had the trigger touched up abit but other than that, they were all stock. Remington should have never dropped that line of rifles out of production. I am an the lookout for one of the tube fed models. They are out there but I am looking for a deal on one. I'll stumble across one sooner or later. Thx, JJ |

James-You mention about touching up the trigger on your Remington-I don't care what brand of gun it is almost all could use some polishing up in that area in my opinion. Guess it's their insurance co. insisting on little stronger trigger strength to avoid potential safety issues.Local Gander Mnt. gunsmith not allowed to go under 3# on a trigger pull. I like 2 to 2 1/2# for my best accuracy. Anyone out there use a scope on your pistols? Whats the handiest way to carry a scoped pistol coonhunting? Are you accurate with it consistantly? Any one have a special way of holding light & pistol while shooting coon out for best accuracy? Any certain brand of scopes better for coonhunting? Just wondering. |

I personally wouldn't have a rifle or pistol that I couldn't get a good trigger pull on. The gunsmith that I use is one of the best trigger guys that I know. Glen mentioned the handi rifles or new england arms single shots, my son's deer rifle is the handi rifle youth model with the 223 and 243 barrel. I had that trigger brought down to 2 3/4 pounds and he loves it. He has about outgrown it now so I will probably order an adult stock for it and have a nice little carbine to keep in the truck. Of course, I will have to find him something abit bigger, man I hate having to buy another gun
. I talked to the gunsmith this morning about putting a scope on my ruger mkII, I am going to get it over to him one day next week. As accurate as the rugers are, I bet it would shoot like a rifle with a scope on it. I am going to get a shoulder holster to pack it in. That would leave me free handed when squirrel and coon hunting. Take care, James

james do they make a trigger kit for the handy rifle or did they file it or what. I bought one in the 204 caliber and really like it but it is about a 6# pull waaay to dang hard. Tim |

He takes them apart and hones them by hand. I know he had to make some slave pins to help reassembly. They aren't easy but a good gunsmith can do it. He charges about 40.00 but can set the trigger on a handi rifle anywhere you want it from a few ounces up to however many pounds you like. JJ |

I know it's not close to you by the way, but he has an ffl and you could probably ship it to him. If you are interested, his name is ray marion and his phone number is 1-502-747-5174. He does great work and is really safe and dependable. JJ |
