Due to my schedule, time to hunt has been limited. Thought I'd squeeze in an afternoon hunt. My neighbor, Tracy, and I loaded up the whole pack on Tuesday and headed to the ranch. Had all 8 dogs with us, 2 bulldogs, 6 running dogs. Boo and Libby are experienced, Capone is getting there, Reba is starting to come along, Wendy knows how to bay but the hunting part is lacking, and this was Minnie's first trip to the woods. If you'll recall from the video clips taken at Mr. Mason's, Reba and Wendy know what a hog is and like to bay one. Minnie on the other hand has seen a hog but still thinks that they are her friend. Well, I think she realizes now, that ain't the case. I was starting to think I'd need to throw Minnie in with a medium size hog. One that would ruff her up a bit and let her know, they are the enemy, not her friend. She'd either get up mad or run for the truck. Well, be carefull what you ask for. I had a good feeling that I knew where the hogs would be so I let them roam in front of us for a ways to that area. All the dogs were out in front looking like that knew what they were doing. I was pleased. Even Minnie was way out in front with the big dogs. That was good as this is her first hunt. We got to a small creek and let them cool off while the big dogs starting looking for sign. Boo opened up a few minutes later and all the dogs went to her. We heard most of the dogs at the bay, so I assumed all were there. We started off in that direction and half way there, all went quiet? We waited and shortly Minnie came in followed by Wendy and then Reba. I kind of half expected as much, they are green and the area was 6' high in weeds. Tough on a young dog. Libby trotted by and wouldn't stop when I called her. She was on a game trail and I assumed on a hot track? We later picked her up about a mile and half south of there. Boo and Capone were still out and by using the tracker I could tell that they were together. We waited about 15 minutes before they both opened up. They were bayed across the creek and probably on the same hogs as a few minutes before. Reba heard them and she was off. I went on foot to get Wendy and Minnie involved. I told Tracy to take the 4 wheeler and the bulldogs around to the other side and see if he could get close. I fought my way through the weeds and as we approached, Boo went to trying to catch. The sow was just big enough that Boo couldn't catch and hold for very long, so it was a battle in progress. Wendy smelled the hog, heard the fight and realized she should be in there too. So now I had 4 dogs barking with Minnie jumping around trying to see what all the commotion was about. The sow broke, ran right past me, and the 4 dogs were in hot pursuit. I figured the hog would escape in the thick weeds and be gone. But Boo, Capone, and Reba stuck with her and got her stopped on the other side of the creek by my 4 wheeler, about a 150 yd run. So off I go again with Minnie in tow. We get back to them and again, catch, get thrown, bark, catch, get thrown, etc. I get the camera out and it's set on a 15 second MPEG setting. I start filming, you can see Minnie jumping around trying to see what is going on. Then the hog breaks, sees Minnie in the trail and takes her down. The hog rolled her for several seconds before the other dogs come to the rescue. When Minnie gets back up, she goes to baying. She sounded like a 75lb black & tan coondog. She was pissed and letting the hog know about it. I yelled for Tracy to release the bulldogs and they caught. I took care of the sow and checked for wounds. No dogs were cut, not even Minnie. Not a scratch on any of them. I know, I know. It could have meant the end for Minnie. 50/50 deal. But sometimes, a good kick in the pants is the best thing? It was getting dark, I figured I'd stop while I was a head and we headed home. I was pleased with Reba and Capone for staying with Boo after the hog broke and ran. That's what I've been working towards. Wendy is progressing and Minnie showed me she knows how to bark. Maybe I'm on the right track with the dogs I currently have? Time will tell, but for now, they aren't going anywhere. A couple of pictures of the weeds so you see what the dogs are running through. Normally, these weeds would be knee high. The 2nd picture is where they were bayed when I went in the first time and she broke and ran. You can see why the young dogs were having a rough time. And a picture of Reba and Capone bayed, Boo was plum tuckered out by now. And the video clip links. Hope you enjoyed, thanks for reading. 1st pic is of Tracy. Tracy is at least 6' 1" so you can see how tall the weeds are. ![]()

Oh, these hogs aren't so tough. I admit, when I first started, I was very cautious and timid when approaching the bay. Now, I just go in without hesitation. You learn real quick, the dogs need you on a bad hog, so no time to sit and fret. When it's a harmless hog, I let them play for a while to get the experience, but when there are long, white teeth showing, the object is kill as quick as you can or you dogs will pay the price. And with this cooler weather, I hope to be in the woods more as these young dogs need to stay in the action. Next trip is planned for Monday afternoon, we have a cool front on the way, should be a good day to go. Stay tuned.............. |
