I ain't got a coon dog on my place but I do have a couple of young dogs that think they are coon dogs.

I took Duke and Mullet Saturday morning before daylight hoping to catch a early morning coon at my feeder. The feeder had been hit that night but it was not fresh from the signs of my feeder. (The water marks on the side of the tire had already dried).

Duke and Mullet started smelling scent and went under the fence and were gone for a while, neither making a sound. After 10 minutes or so Duke hit a couple of licks on a tree but went on. Later Mullet barked treed a couple of times in the same area but he also shut up. I am thinking there is no way for these dogs to do anything with this track. Both dogs have treed squirrels real good but have not been on a coon, so I did not expect much. After another 10-15 minutes both dogs started treeing again in the same area pretty hard. I thought to myself, if you are going to lie, might as well swear to it.

Day light arrived and after I crawled under and climbed over blow downs for a while I finally reached the pups in an area with a few standing trees. They were treed on a half blown down oak that was leaning into a large magnolia full of leaves. If they did have a coon, I would be lucky to find him. As luck would have it, when I scoped the area where the oak touched the magnolia, I was looking at a ring tail.

I was thinking after all this that I have been with a lot of so called finished coon dogs of other flavors and they would not even smelled this track to start with. These two dogs are as natural as they come and really have some potential if I can keep them in the woods.

Got to love these Kemmers!!

After babysitting saturday. Took Mullet, Duke and Gator to the "big thicket" Sunday morning to let them rub some hair off and possible put an eye out and try to tree a sq or two.

Mullet started cold trailing coon scent by the feeder but was hung up so I helped him "get on" a little and he started warming up. He hit on a tap tree and treed a little then went on, Duke opened a time or two with Mullet so I thought they would do like last week and tree me a cold coon but they played out in the heavy briars and blowdowns. Guess I was asking to much for my young dogs.

Mullet did tree a couple of squirrels but as you can see in the pic. it is so thick I could barely get him in the picture.

That is all I have close to home is a thicket but I can at least get them started and woods broke. I believe when my dogs get in some good clean woods they will not know what to do. They will probably run so fast that they beat the coon to the tree! lol.

Made a short round last night. Mullet and Duke struck the hot track I been waiting for and the stupid or smart coon headed for the pine thicked instead of the hardwoods which is not much better. Mullet hit the tree first and Duke was right behind him and they were hammering.

This pine thicked consist of pines about a big around as your leg and thick. I had to push my way to them. When I got to them, I had to reach through the brush to feel the tree they were on and when I tried to look up, I couldn't see past my hat. I encouraged them and told them how great they were and headed back to the road.

My buddy Lloyd Herring called me on my cell phone while I was in the thicket. Told him he should be with me. I was 10' from the road and hung up in briars and brush. He told me to stop talking so he could hear my pups treeing. lol. I told him he wasn't going to set on a couch and listen to my dogs tree!lol

Still ain't got a coon dog but I don't know any other way to make one except in the woods as much as possible even though my woods ain't fit for "man or beast".

Got to love it!!

Calvin, I am going to try and get there this weekend. I told my wife that if I ever get in some good clean woods where I am not ducking or crawling over or under something, I might just jerk my cloths off and go running through the woods a hollering and screaming!!!! lol.

Hope to see you Saturday!

I got that sucker tonight! Bitch coon thought she would feed up with this front coming through. She didn't hit the pine thicket. She thought she would climb a red oak in an open area to see what was going on, I guess. Mullet hit the tree hammering with Duke right behind her. Gator almost treed, he is showing more interest every time out.

I will post pic in morning!!

I knew that sucker would make a mistake sooner or later!!

Sure did my pups some good. That is the first hot coon I was able to knock out for them!!

Added tree pic this morning! Coon was walking all over this tree. She knew she messed up. I wasn't wasteing much time with pic because she was coming out and I did not want her to bail out into the thicket or hide in the top canopy of tree.

Mullet has his back to me and you can see a little of Duke on the other side of tree!

Charlie that is good news considering your hunting conditions. You have convinced me to put out feeders for these young dogs and I hope to get some out later today.

Here is a pic of Coon Kill and I made sure she was mad when she hit the ground but these sorry mutts were pretty rough.

Gator showed a lot of interest and almost treed. I wish I could have spent more time at the tree with him but, Like I said this coon was coming out. He was pretty rough on the Kill though.

I'VE rocked my babies at nite when they've cried
I've seen their teardrops turn into smiles
