A good friend of mine joined me yesterday afternoon on a hog hunt. I only took two of my Kemmers, Capone and Reba, along with my two older cur dogs.
Before my hunting partner arrived, I struck out in search of a hog. I had my best dog Boo on the 4 wheeler, thought I'd let the others have a chance at finding one first. We got into some thick weeds and brush and Reba beelined for one close by and starting barking. The other two went with her and they too began to bark. I dumped Boo off and thought I was about to catch a hog. Thing is, he broke and ran. Dogs went every direction looking for his trail. But he came right back to that thicket. Reba came back around and started barking again. Dogs came back and all started up. He did this 4 times in under 5 minutes, every time, returning to the same thicket. Once the bulldog went in, the fight was on but he threw the bulldog and that was that. The dogs stayed on him for over a mile in that brush. They'd get him stopped, he'd break and run, they get him stopped again, he'd break and run. I had to leave them to go get my friend at the gate and once we got him unloaded, we went after them. They were still at it when we got to them but Reba came out, then Libby. We had to go track Capone to get him off of it.
I was proud of Capone and Reba for sticking with it for so long. I might not have gotten the hog this time, but my dogs showed me something, and that's a good thing.
Charlie brought 4 of his curs and we relocated to another area with them. Once we unloaded them, we didn't have to go far when a nice little boar crossed the road just ahead of the dogs. His dogs are pretty gritty so this hog didn't stand a chance. We used the bulldog to seal the deal, but Boo and Reba both got cut. Again, Reba and Capone were there and did their part. And even with Reba getting a small cut, she still stayed in the action and never quit.
Her old man, Yellow Jack III, along with Mr Kemmer would be proud of her. She's on the right track to making a good dog.

No video this time, but I did get a picture of the hog. Reba is the dog on the right. She's growling at the other dog, that would be the Yellow Jack coming out. :P

Dee, sure looks like you have some hog dogs in the making. Glad to see you hunting these kemmers.

Reba sounds like she is turning it on and figuring out the game!!

Good luck and keep the stories and pics coming!!

I'm trying my best to keep them on the hogs. With this cool weather finally arriving, it makes me want to call in sick everyday. :D
But with the price of gas supposedly going to hit $4 a gallon by Christmas, I don't know how many trips I can make and still feed my family.
I have to start getting all the pups in the woods as much as I can. They need to start figuring out what they are supposed to do and the only way I know of doing that is putting them on hogs in the wild.
I think from now on, all my future pups will spend the first 4 months of their life at Alton's running free. :P

Biggun, little Reba is starting to shine. She's well on her way to becoming a hog dog now. I'd be hard pressed to name a fault in her at this point, considering her age and experience. The only issue she has, and it's something inherent in all Yellow Jack dogs, is her bad attitude around other dogs. :D I had heard the the stories about Yellow Jack and his off spring, but it's one of those things you have to see to believe. ;)
The other two pups each have their quirks.
The black brindle gyp, Wendy, likes to bay a hog but she doesn't have a whole lot of drive. She'll get out and hunt, but not hunt hard. I'm hoping that more woods time will remedy this and she'll get more involved?
The youngest, Minnie, has all the physical attributes that I want in a Kemmer. She's fast, she's super agile, she's got the endurance to run all day, and under 40 lbs. But she hasn't shown a lot of interest in pigs yet? Again, I'm hoping this will change with more woods time and as she matures? This is the gyp from Rob Day.
I'm wondering what kind of dog would come from a cross of Minnie and Turbo Dogs pup, Gator? Oh well, got plenty of time to think about that cross. :P
