Gator is 10 mos old now and has really not show much interest in squirrels. I guess he thinks Big Game dogs ain't suppose to fool with such varments. So I am starting Gator on coon to see what he thinks about them. I showed him his first live coon yesterday and he went nuts. This evening, I am going to turn Mr Coon loose in an open field and let Gator catch him or put him up one of the small trees. Usually this is all it takes to turn the light on for a pup. Gator seems to be the type of pup that has to hate his quarry. He needs one to p_ _ s him off. The harder you get on him the madder he gets. I think he will hate a coon real bad after a couple of weeks of training sessions. My uncle can catch me all the coon I need but form the way he acted on his first one, it won't take but a couple sessions. Duke and Mullet are just starting on coon and they have a long way to go themselves so my work is cut out for me this year but I love working with pups and young dogs. |

Sunday morning, I went to check my coon freeders behind the house and walk my Mullins pup. I decided to take Gator and I was really surprised how he acted without any other grown dogs. He didn't mind the pup at all but is real jealous if my other dogs get around me. Guess that is why he has been hanging around me more than I like. This morning he made several good rounds in the woods. I saw a sq. timbering through the thick vines. I walked back to see what was going on and Gator was up on the tree looking up and was up and down several trees looking for the sq. It is real thick and I am sure he never saw the sq. but the point is, this is the very first time he has shown any interest in a squirrel. He did not tree but showed a 100% improvement in interest. I find that some cur dogs will hunt like a hound or with anybody, anywhere, anytime but most cur dogs are people dogs and hunt and work for their master. That is one of the reasons I hunt curs. I like them to stay in touch and work for me and not for me to work for them. Until I get Gator going good! I think he is the type that needs hunting strickly by himself or maybe with a pup to tag alone, at least that is what he is showing me. He is very intelligent and personable and gets along with all my kennel but he will boguard me from the other dogs when I am trying to pet them and such. I don't know if all Yellow Jack dogs act different than the Gold Nugget blood but Gator is surely different than any other Kemmers I have fooled with. Makes it fun and interesting. I will keep you all posted. Good or bad!! |
