Kemmers & hogs

Went out this morning and what a great day for hunting. 50 degrees, light mist, heavy & low cloud cover, PERFECT.
I wanted to let my young and in-experienced dogs have a go at being the lead dogs so I let the two old dogs ride on the 4 wheeler for backup.
On the ground I had Capone, my 4 year coon dog from Heath Stringer. Reba, my 1 year old from Biggun. And Wendy, she's 10 months old out of Odeblak.
It took them awhile to find a hog but it wasn't for a lack of trying. They flat out beat the bushes and I was extremely pleased with their "get out and go." One thing I noticed. They were primarily trying to wind, whereas my hound crosses that were on the 4 wheeler will just as often run a medium to cold track versus straight out winding a hog. For the two young dogs, I can understand that due to their age and inexperience, but I kinda expected the old coondog to take a track? Am I wrong in that assumption? Doesn't really bother me as long as they get job done and it's not like we are short on hogs down here.
Capone opened up first and it was just a timing thing with the other two as they had just split up and weren't with him when he struck the hog. But as soon as he opened up, they went to him and before we could really react to it and even get the catchdog loose, they caught the hog. Luckily he was a small, no cutters, boar hog of about 60 lbs. But I was still pleased with their performance and their hustle.
After pictures, we continued on. We hadn't gone far when a group of about 15 hogs crossed the road in front of us about 50 yds ahead. The three dogs on the ground didn't see them but my two old dogs on the 4 wheeler sure did. I took off running trying to get the three on the ground to pick up their track. My other two were going nuts on the rig and this confused my other three. Then, my worst mightmare happened. I had made a tactical error when I clipped my #1 dog to the rig. Instead of clipping her via her day to day collar, I clipped her on her tracking collar. Well, out of that she came in her struggles to get free and run past me she did, naked as a jaybird with no tracking collar on 36,000 arcres of hog infested territory. I dumped out the other old dog as my mind panicked. I retreived her collar and by now, they had two hogs caught from the group. I raced on foot to the first caught hog and tried to lay my hands on my naked dog, but she rolled out and ran to the next hog. At the second hog, before we laid hands on the hog, I was able to sneak in behind her and grab her tail. The collar went back on and off she went after the rest of that group. From there, we tracked her about a mile away and picked her up as she had obviously fallen too far behind the group to catch up.
Due to the time and my schedule, we called it a day. Loaded them up and headed to the truck.
But my goal was accomplished, at least for today. My long term goal, as you know, is to eventually run nothing but Kemmers. Today was just the beginning. I'm still not 100% there yet, but it was a good start. With a week off for Christmas just ahead, I hope to have a repeat soon. :D

Here's their first solo hog together.

And of the 2nd hog. That's Wendy and Reba hanging on. I took this as I ran by Tracy to get to the 3rd hog and my naked dog. Not bad for two young pups.

Lookin' good Dee, Man I wish we had half the hogs you boys have... Keep them pups in the lead spot and they'll improve more and more each trip to the woods. Looks like Wendy has a good holt on that ear, & Reba better learn to stay away from that nose or she'll be needing a dental plan early in life  ......... Great pics as usual dee, looks like you had a fun day...... Biggun

It was a fun hunt. And I hope both of those pups learn to back up & respect the bigger hogs. They were lucky today. One way or another, they will learn. :P
And Biggun, I promise you, just about everyone in South Texas would agree. We'd gladly give you half of our hogs. :D :D
I was sure proud of the way all three of them got out and beat the brush. Wendy still needs to learn to stick with the other dogs once they strike a track/hog, but she's still young and I'm hoping she'll grow more confident.
And thanks for the compliments on my dogs. I really can't take credit. Mr Kemmer deserves the accolades on their looks, I just keep 'em fed right. ;)

Looking real good Dee! Biggun is right, give them pups the lead and you may not catch as many piggys to start with but when pups TAKE THE LEAD you might just wipe out the ranch of pork!!lol.

Love the pics!

I talked to Leslie Marek last night. He is near Waco Tx. he uses the Kemmer dogs to hunt hogs. He told me he trains his dogs to run hogs out of farmers cornfields. He said he don't fool much with catching them and killing them he just runs them out of cornfields and after a few times they stop coming back to that feild. But I guess there are lots of cornfields in that area because he runs hogs often. He has Target ll bred dogs also some off of Sport and he has some Fireball bred dogs.I really enjoyed my talk with Leslie he is a very interesting fellow to talk to I don't know how far he is from you Dee but you may want to check him out about his Kemmer dogs.

I have been to his house once and had a great visit with him and have since talked to him numerous times on the phone. He kept promising to get me some dogs and it just never worked out. It's been several months since I last spoke to him. He does have a yard full of Kemmers, that's for sure. They were everywhere as I recall. And he's about a two and half hour drive north of me on IH35.
