Every rabbit or squirrel I ever shot since I was a kid has been rolled in flour-fried in a skillet-then finnished in roaster in oven. Then served with mashed potatos & game gravy. I loved this & still do. This summer I've been doing some grilling (burgers, hotdogs, chicken etc.) and I got to wondering if anyone has ever grilled squirrel on outside gas grill. I don't know anyone that has. If any of you have how did it turn out? Success or not? What is your method? I was brought up to not waste food & that still holds true with me today. Rather than ruin some good meat I'm asking for your thoughts on this subject. Our squirrel season is just around the corner & it got me to thinking about the grilling part. Thank you

Wendell,

I don't know about sq but deer meat is great on the grill and Tim has decided the only way to eat rabbit is when it is cooked on the grill. I can personally tell you that deer is GREAT on the grill.............I (as in me only) don't know about the other two.........they both have the rodents front teeth and I can't get the meat past my lips  ! Tim has laughed at me for years over this but like I told him.........I realize its a mind thing with me........He has ask why I can eat deer but not sq or rabbit...............I've told him that I'm used to eating meat that came off the hoof ( beef and pork). Although, I WILL NOT eat livermush........helped my Mamaw make it homemade when I was about 8 or 9 yrs old and have not eaten it since.

The way Tim does the rabbit on the grill is basically the same way you do chicken breast. He just take a brush and brushes on some BBQ sauce as it is cooking. The meat is beautiful and tender just don't know what it taste like but Tim loves it :D .

Wendy- On another web-site a hunter reminded me that squirrels are pretty lean for grill. He recomended wrapping them with bacon & cooking them till bacon is done. He says they taste like high priced meat that way! Wouldn't the bacon be done a whole lot sooner than the rest of meat? Our rabbits are pretty fat so they should be ok. What do you think?

I don't know b/c I have never tried to cook SQ or rabbit. Tim or his mom has cooked those meats. The beef I have had that was wrapped in bacon was really good and the bacon was still soft but it was done. I don't know but being wrapped around another meat may keep it from burning.

I started following my Daddy and my Papaw through the rabbit fields as soon as I was able to keep up and they never let their meat go to waste. If they didn't eat it it was given to someone that would. So I understand about not wanting to waste the meat. I love to get in my cookbooks and experiment......much to Tim's dismay  ! Sometimes it is really good, sometimes it is edible ( Tim eats...keeps his mouth shut...and continues to live ;) ), and on occassion I refuse to give it to the dogs :o ! Trying new recipes and styles of cooking can end up with wasted food..............but the food is wasted only once :) !

Experiment and enjoy.........makes life interesting!

I cooked a Fox squirrel on the grill this afternoon, I kept it sprayed down with spray butter & added just a touch of A-1 steak sauce to it . It sure was good & really tender & that is what surprised me. I been waiting to get my first squirrel to try on the grill every since this got posted & it was well worth the wait , now I need another. :D

I ain't a cajun(coona_s) but I have been eating their cooking since college days and they can cook any kind of wild game and make it melt in your mouth.

I learned to slow roll boil all my squirrels or rabbits in onions and a little creole season or, my favorite, a little liquid crab boil until the sq or rabbit is fork tender. Some will get tender quicker than others so take them out as they become fork tender.

Let them cool. Now you can batter and fry them until the flower is brown and they will absolutely melt in your mouth or you can put them on the grill with your favorite sauce until hot and again they will melt in your mouth.

note: Try soaking some chicken in crab boil for about 1 hr and then batter/fry the chicken. It is great!

Dang I am hungry now! Hope my mutts can tree a few for a good cook out! :)

Both of these cooking methods sound interesting & delicious. I'm a fair country cook but not a chef by any means so I have couple questions.
Blackstar I can find your cooking ingredients locally without any trouble at supermarket but Charles you are going to have to elaborate a little(or a lot) Before I pour that stuff in the pan what the heck is "crab boil"? After Iv'e come this close to eating him I don't want to scare that squirrel out of the skillet now! LOL

Wendel, what sheltered lives we live!! :P Crab boil has been around for ever. taters boild in crab boil to make tater salad can't be beat.

This is the stuff shrimp or any seafood is boiled in to give it the unique flavors. I like to add corn on the cob, hot dog weiners, whole onions(my favorite), whole ham, cabage, mushrooms. You can even boil red fish to make it taste just like crab meat. Good stuff.

I might need to put you a care package together and send you!

Here is a link to Zatarains products. There are others but they have been around forever.

Go to this website--they've got about 30 recipes for squirrel.

http://justgamerecipes.com/

I'm not sure if they've got one for the grill, but you can grill lean game like squirrel with a little imagination and the indirect heat method. Turn on one side of the burner or pile up the coals on one side and cook on the other side with the lid down. Use wood chips for flavoring or just use a charcoal smoker with wood chips. Cook or smoke the squirrel as slowly as possible using bacon and/or your favorite barbeque sauce.

I like food-related topics. :D

You Guys and I am talking about most men are quite funny when it comes to the kitchen  ! In my experience most of you walk in the house and one of the first things out of your mouths is "What's for supper?"....................and then the weather gets nice and you get out the grill and all of a sudden you know how to cook :o !

Keep the ideas and recipes coming because from other experiences I found that if a man can cook HE CAN COOK :D !

Happy Hunting and Good Grilling!

Dang I guess I've spent more days out in the corn & bean fields than I realized over the years!
Greg- Thats quite a wild game web-site. They cover everything from alligators to woodcock! I never dreamt there were 23 ways to cook a squirrel.
Turbo- I remember Zatarains. They used to run a comercial on tv about 20 yr. ago. Haven't heard from them since. Had forgotten all about them. Man I'll bet their stuff is hot! I'll also bet you guys would really laugh at anything they call "cajun hot & spicy" that you find on the grocery shelves up here.
Wendy- um...................................well ...................ok I guess there is some truth in what you said(hard for me to admit LOL) BUT sometimes us guys grill just so you gals won't have to get your stoves all messy!!!!!! Not our fault we get our best ideas on nice days :D Farmboy-1

You will get no complaint from me when Tim decides to grill or cook. When we fry fish at home my only responsibility is the cole slaw. Tim does the fish, fries, and homemade hushpuppies. He can cook when he takes a notion and he's a GOOD COOK when he does. Tim's dad told him a long time ago that he had better hold on to me because they didn't come in my combination often. He told Tim that I was a good cook and I liked to watch sports. He said you couldn't beat that combo with a stick  ! Tim's Dad passed away in 1996 and I still miss my nother DADDY :( .
