Finally got the dogs back in the woods this morning after about a 2 month layoff. Took Boo and 2 young Kemmers, along with 2 catchdogs.
As you can see, they didn't have to go far to find the first hog. We dumped out from the truck and they were bayed withing seconds. I didn't use the ranger finder, but I'd say the truck is about 50, maybe 60 yards, away?
Loaded them and took them a little further down the road and they struck hog #2 within a minute or so. They ran the track about a quarter mile before they put a hog on the end of it. He wasn't very big, but the young dogs got fired up over it.
We loaded em up and took them back to the truck at this point as I had to move a blind for an afternoon deer hunt and Tracy needed to get back for a doctors appointment. I got home, switched out ATVs and restocked the truck for deer hunting. Drove into town and picked up my youngest from school and we went back to the ranch for deer.
We had some hogs come out not long after we settled in. I decided to shoot one before they ate all the corn and spooked the deer, it was still 2 hours until dark. About an hour later, and still no sign of deer, the hogs returned. I asked Emily, who is 7 years old and has never shot anything larger than my 22 rifle, if she wanted to shoot a hog. She practically yelled "YES SIR!"
So I gave a her a crash course in handling my Sako 243, took the video camera off its tripod so she could use it as a gun rest, and tried to calm her nerves. When the hogs got to 50 yards, I had her get ready, talked her through what was about to happen, released the safety and told her the weapon was ready. Pick your spot, breath, and squeeze the trigger. BOOM!
At first I wasn't positive she hit her mark, but we went to check and immediately found a good blood trail. I let her track it and she found it about 50 yards into the brush. I checked the entry hole and it was exactly where I told her to aim. Center mass, right behind the front shoulder. :P
Not bad for a 7 year old girl on her first attempt ever of shooting a real rifle and on a live target. :D
I had the video camera going right up until she shot and immediately afterwards, including the tracking. But with her using the tripod, I had to set the camera down to help her with the rifle so I didn't capture the actual shot. Oh well, maybe next time.
First pic is of hog #1 by the truck, second pic is of hog #2 after we pulled it from the brush. I took several pics while they were still in the brush but that's all you can see, brush.
And third pic is of Emily and her hog.
