We went for a little round Thursday morning, struck about a 165# Boar and he must have bought himself a new pair of Nike's on Wednesday, he ran about a hour and bayed down in the gulf for about 10 minutes, then we were in for another hour strait run and he bayed where the arrow in the picture shows for about 30 minutes this time under the rock bluffs in the ivey thickets, he broke again and left the country down in the gulf and back up the draw to the right in the picture strait up the gorge like a rocket, our dogs came back to the boy scout camp in about 4 hours worn plum out, Ole Star, Crackhead ( my plott female) Jack & Jackie shore nuff were tired when I picked them up at the boy scout camp about 5 miles away from where this picture was taken...... I was suprised to see them stay on this boar as long as they did, and the caretaker at the Camp seen them on the hog & said it was about a 165# boar. He said the boar ran through 3 page wire fences when he seen them, about a hour later the dogs came back to him..... So all in all we had about 8 miles of running, ( in the mountains mind you ) and at least 3 tough bays, probally several more out of hearing, & 2 young dogs stayed every step of the way... I'll take that to start the season off........ But I sure hate eating this store bought pork sausage this morning, some fresh would have tasted soooo much better.....Biggun

Dang Jason, sounds like your dogs had a heck of a work out! Glad no one was injured! We were up at Roberts last weekend, as you know! The scenery of the fall colors in those mountains was breath taking to look at. I bet the are really 'breath taking' to chase a hog in! I just as soon look from the truck!! and enjoy the view! Sounds like a good time! |

If I was over there where that arrow is pointing, I wouldn't have ever got back to where the camera is.

The bad thing about hunting Scoot's gulf is there is only a couple ways in and out, we went to the bottom and turned loose, dogs went high, we came out to where the picture was taken, the dogs made several trips up & down until they bayed.... It would have taken about 3 hours to walk the bay from where the picture was taken.... That is the problem with hunting this area, alot of area and very few roads to get to the dogs. Most of the time when we get a hog killed he bays in the bottom of the gulf or comes out top and bay within a half mile or so to a road other than that there's no way a pack of dogs can keep a rough running hog bayed for 2+ hours to get to him...... That's why I wish we had some hunting like Dee & Rob Day has up here
........ But I guess I wouldn't trade these mountains for anything so we will just keep after them things around here.......Biggun

You're a better man than me, to hunt that rough country.
My flat land and open terrain has turned me soft.

Dee thats all we got to hunt up here brother..... I sure do rely on the ole Polaris alot .....lol..... I just can't imagine going hog hunting and seeing 25 hogs from the 4 wheeler, you don't know how lucky you are brother....... Check this web page out about Scott's Gulf, this is home to the Largest Hog Population around here and if you hunt hogs then you will have to go here..... http://www.uppercumberlandcaving.net/Gulf/sgtour.html |
