The girls have been after me to take them hog hunting, don't you know I hate that.
Soccer's over, football season is over, IT'S TIME TO HUNT! We had great hunting conditions today. From sunup to sundown, it stayed between 50-55 degrees, with a solid cloud cover, and a slight NE breeze. We weren't in a hurry, didn't get there until 9, but it didn't take long for the action to start. They struck a small group of hogs, caught one as we were pulling up and once I grabbed it, Boo rolled out after the rest of them. EllieMae has been picking up on this and has been rolling out with Boo, but not this time. She ran back to the atv and was acting weird? I reached down to grab her and she freeked out, almost bit me? I then saw that her right eye was solid red, filled with blood. She was scared and confused. Apparently it got poked by a thorn or cactus? I loaded her up and we headed to the next bay. Got there and they had the spotted hog bayed in a dry gulley. Katie started taking pictures while I took care of business. Good thing though, EllieMae wanted in on the action so I dumped her to them. She jumped right in and did her part. But she was having a time trying to adjust to the one eye thing. We loaded em up and relocated about a mile away. I dumped Wiley and EllieMae out and they immediately ran to the east as fast as they could run and barking full open with every step. I told the girls they were just showing their age and Emily replied, "They're problem barking at some quail?" We all laughed and told her she was probably right. I thought "What the heck?" and dumped Boo out also. She ran after them and they didn't go 100 yards before we heard a pig squeeling! They had caught a little pig! We were shocked. hehe Again, Katie was taking pics, I was taking care of business. Again, the dogs rolled out on the rest and we were in hot pursuit. We caught up to Wiley and Boo after about a mile or so and they already had a small male hog caught. I grabbed Boo and threw her on the atv, I figured we were done for the day. We had to track EllieMae, I'm not sure if she came off the race because of her eye or she went after her own hog? But we were ready to head to the house anyway. Once again, had a great time with the girls. They got to get up close and personal on 3 of the 4 bays. None of the hogs were very big, but we still had a blast. I've had one other dog in the past get an eye wound exactly like EllieMae did today and within about a week, it was cleared up. I am hoping and praying the same will happen this time. She's a good one and on the road to being a great one. Leslie Marek is breeding them right. Even with the injury, her heart was still in the fight and ready for action. Hope you enjoyed the story and the pictures. Some may be blurry, it was Katie's first time to take the pics and she was a wee bit nervous. haha..... This is the 2nd hog, a small sow. ![]()

![]() A better shot. I think the camera was trying to focus on everything in the first pic?

Dee this is en eye sauve I use for scratches and pokes. It is called Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc Ophthalmic Ointmnet USP. You can buy it at your vets. It is fairly inexpensive. You use it twice a day for five to seven days. Hope this helps. Great hunt and great pics. good job girls. Laree

GREAT NEWS!!!! Just got home and went to check on EllieMae. Her eye is almost 100% cleared up!!!!
We put some Terramycin in last night and just did it again. But it has no redness to it to it all, just a bit of cloudiness in the inside corner. Lord willing, it will be good as new in no time. Thank you Lord! |
