How many on here coon hunt and what are y'all hunting? I coon hunt a lot more than I squirrel hunt. I admit I enjoy coon hunting more and have more time to hunt them. I am coon hunting a 19 month old male that is Strut x Juice, a 2 1/2 yr old female from Strut x Penny, and a 4 1/2 yr old female Juice from TC Target x Blondy Target. I haven't decided what to hunt my 3/4 strut pup on yet. Just curious what's working out there. |

Ben you are surely hunting a good line of dogs. I have been hunting dogs out of Cajun Nugget(7/8) and Ole Trouble(Blondie III) for 15 years and I also like them. The have the winding ability I like and run a track heads up and like "Robert's Standards for Breeding" in our year book, they make cold tracks appear hot and circle and drift until they find the hot end of the track and run to catch. The Duke dog I have now was bred by Lloy Herring. He has a shot of Yellow Jack through his Herrings Buckshot dog that was bred to Shenna(7/8 plus old Trouble). This line of dogs has produced some good coon dogs that will get gone and get treed and are mostly silent to semi silent on track. Lloyd Herring is now the proud owner of the Bo dog I had that is 3/4 Herrings Buckshot. Bo is a get gone, get treed type dog and the only way you get him off a coon tree is to put a snap on him. Lloyd was excited to get him back and I am excited to have a hunting buddy back. These Kemmer dogs really excell on coon. I sq hunt also and Duke really loves sqs but with work, I do not get to hunt sqs as much. Coon hunting is my passion so I am trying to stay with the bigger, cold nose, winding, open trailing type dogs. I really enjoy listening to a coon dog working out a coon trail and putting an end to it. Saying all that, Duke is mostly silent on track but I have one pup out of him and Birdy(Turbo x old Trouble/Target's Runt) that may put some mouth back on this pup. I hope!! I am also breeding Duke to Kemmers Lady Nugget that should produce open trailing dogs. She is 7/8 on top and 3/4 Jr on bottom. We have a lot of fine coon dogs is the KSBA and I enjoy hearing about all of them. So hope to hear more in this post! |

Ben,as most people know most of I coon hunt more than sq. hunt , as of late I have been doing quit abit of sq hunting because I'm laid-off from work untill Feb. & Ihave more time to sq. hunt , I may be a little different than some be cause my dogs are not strait coon or sq. dogs , they are tree dogs , I mean they will "most of the time tree any thing that climes" as that is what I like . Ol Boomer is pretty much wide open on track & JJ is what I call semi open, the Blaze dog that is from Boomer& Rose & also the Socks dog which is from Boomer & Lux's Babe, is a grand daughter to Hilltop Nig are both semi open on track , Ol Boomer has always been a get treed , stay treed tipe of tree dog as are his pups but a little over a year ago I almost lost him to a heat stroke when he caught a big boar coon in a corn field & as a result he will fall short on coon by pulling up short, now he is still pretty tuff on sq. Boomer is a grand son to Yellow Bob, Yellow Jack, Target & Gold Nugget as Robert puts it he's a complete package. GOD BLESS, Roger B. |

Ben, I enjoy coon hunting but I am squirrel hunting alot more right now. I'm trying to get an 8 month old female going and I have had better luck starting pups on squirrel than coon. My primary dog is old Wally. He will be turning 2 years old at the end of next month so I guess you couldn't call him old. He is making a dog that I really like. He is stone silent though unless he is treed. I kind of miss an open mouth dog on coon and hopefully I'll have one soon that will open on the coon track. Turkey season will roll around in April and I'll be back to coon hunting for a month or so. |

Seems like most of us like a open track dog. All of mine are open on track and the Strut breeding seems to put a bawl locate in them. The Target female I have is as open mouthed as it gets...LOL FAST track dog and very cold nosed. Shes one of the faster track dogs I've seen and will easily run with the hound guys I hunt with.. The others are a little slower on track, but still open and are better winding dogs. PLENTY of tree, but are also accurate. I also enjoy listening to the chase and that's part of the fun for me. I look forward to hearing from some more folks and appreciate hearing about y'alls dogs.... |

I have never had one of my Kemmer dogs to be open on track, I have had a couple that were I guess semi open on a hot track, but I have had some young dogs to run up on a deer and chase it mostly by site for a little ways and you would think they were 1st cousins with a walker hound, but when you would get them started to treeing sq. and coon they would be silent.I always liked a silent mouth dog on coon because when a coon discovers that silent mouth dog is on his trail he has to go up something close or get caught.Let me explain though that we used to hunt for the fur and meat to pay bills etc. and we were hunting for a different purpose then than now at least I am. Now I'm pleasure hunting with my dogs to enjoy them and the sport of just coon hunting or sq. hunting so after all I've said here what difference does it make if they are silent, semi open or wide open just as long as they get treed and stay treed and satisfy you with the way they do it. I've hunted with and like them all(open, semi-open, and silent). Anymore though I prefer the silent mouth dogs due to the amount of hunting land available around here. It seems like new houses are popping up in all of my old hunting places limiting the amount of ground you can cover. The ol' silent mouths seem to make a coon take a tree quicker lessening the chance of disturbing the neighbors with a long running coon. |

Its like Fords and Chevys I guess when it come to style of hunting and open and closed mouth on track. I like to squirrel hunt more than coon hunt. I only coon with Jimino and Charles when they come to my place and I do that only to irratate them when there dogs tree possums.
I did bring back a cur puppy from Roberts that is out of Black Jack and a TC Target ll x TC/Blondie Target female that I have with a friend of mine that I have high hopes for. He is just a 4 month old pup and should get a good chance of proving himself this year.

I surely love a silent mouth coon dog, and Wally isn't going to dissapoint me, but every once in awhile, I love to hear a good race. One farm I hunt, the coon are ran so hard that if a dog opens, you'll find them in a hole somewhere. Connie and me are going to pop in there real soon with wally and Belle and surprise them. I miss my old Jake dog in the cornfields opening on coon and knowing I would be going to a tree sooner or later. The absolute best cur coon dog I have known was a female that Wintford owned, she was absolutely silent and when you cut her loose, you would find her on the tree. She would not bark until she was treed. That was before I owned a tracking collar and I have no way of knowing how deep she would go before getting treed but I know that I walked a long ways sometimes to get to her. She was just as good of a squirrel dog, and the first silent dog that I have ever hunted behind. The biggest problem that I have found with really open curs is that they also are open on squirrels and for my taste, that makes a useless squirrel dog. The female that I am talking about was the mother of Ronnie Wootens dogs, Slim Jim and Big Red. |

I can understand someone liking a silent dog. Like Cajun said Ford or Chevy...LOL I guess since I fooled with hounds I like hearing the chase. Most of the time I can tell you how cold the track iis, whether its a lay up, and other things by their tone when trailing. I hunt some big woods and theres a lot of hills and hollers so hearing them on track helps. I guess the hides bring the same price no matter what trees it....LOL |

I'd say it would surprise alot of folks how many coon an old silent mouth dog could show them. The coons just don't have alot of time to pick out a den tree or a big bushy pine to climb when they have a big cur steaming up their hind parts for them
My older brother and I used to love to dump ol'Smokin Joe or later on Sam out in a corn field. Alot of the times all you'd ever hear was growls, corn stalks flying and coons a squalling when they got caught out in the middle with no trees to climb. Sam was always good about bringing the coon out to you and dropping it before going back in for another look around :ph43r: The Cajun would have been proud, neither one would give a second glance to a 'possum. Here is David with Ol'Sam. I think he was a full brother to Mr. Fasola's Turbo Dog.
