I will let good friend Wendel Bures from Iowa explain this picture.I think it may be about the time Wendel got started hunting dogs. I am sure Wendel will have plenty of time to explain with this winter storm going on... :D

Thank you Calvin for posting these old photos for me. . I don't ever remember being without some kind of dog in my life. .
Top photo is of me when I was about 4 yrs. old with my first dog "Peppy" back in the mid 1950's. He was a grade farm shepard as was almost all the farmdogs around here were back then. We kinda grew up together. My aunt gave him to me when he was just a puppy. (and so was I at that time) Peppy was my playmate-babysitter & faithful companion. At this age we shared many adventures together around the farm.He also helped with the livestock when my folks needed another hand. He was never tied in his life & when he was visiting the neighbors female he was shot at by this neighbor making him gunshy from then on. I was too young to be much of a dog trainer at the time but I remember Peppy catching rabbits for us when Dad was picking corn in the fall. Dad had several rabbits hanging on the wagon when he brought in the loads of corn from the field. He never bothered our cats but when I was a little older I "hissed" Peppy on a cat that was up on top of one of our wooden cow stanchions in the barn. He sat there & chopped steadily at her. Maybe I had a "treeing farm shepard" back then but was too young to know it!

2nd photo is of my uncle Van Donley with his coondogs in 1964. On left is Old Nick (1/2 black & tan & 1/2 shepard) Little Blue in middle(1/2 Bluetick & 1/2 fox terrior) and on right Old Sport (Redtick & Cur). This is the man who took me on my first coonhunt New Years eve 1965. Little Blue treed a coon for us this nite. After shooting the coon we layed the coon on a nearby log which we planned to come back to later. When we returned the coon wasn't on the log. The coon was about 10 feet from log. Tracks in the snow showed us that a grey fox had discovered the dead coon & dragged it off the log after we left. We always laughed that this coon didn't get to see the New Year come in. Uncle Van taught me a lot about coonhunting & dogs in general. He didn't care much for a fullblooded hound. "A little cur mixed in made them smarter" he always said. He was a good trainer & dogs didn't fool him much. Back then you had to be a good trainer cause lots of dogs wasn't that natural about treeing. If he were still alive today he would love these Kemmer Stock curs that we all enjoy. I know he was trying to get the type of dog that we hunt today but the Mnt. curs (as old a breed as they are)just wasn't in our area back then. Reg. hounds were becoming popular & dominant because comp. nite hunts were starting. I hunted hounds for several years but never forgot the dogs my uncle had & how they hunted & handled & worked for him . Before his death my uncle had told me about Mnt. curs & their abilities. I always remembered this information and in the mid 1980's I corresponded with Robert Kemmer. Roberts stock of Mnt. Curs have the traits that I have always wanted in a treedog. And I have owned & hunted them since. Only thing I regret is the Kemmer Cur wasn't around when I was a kid & when my uncle was still alive to enjoy them. Van's 2 nephews & I hunted with him till his death in 1971. His 2 nephews & I still coon & squirrelhunt together every fall. We hunt the same woods we hunted with our uncle as we did in years past & when we go by the cemetary where he is buried on the way to the woods I think of him & Little Blue - Sport & Nick & the memories that they gave us. Today I guess my uncles dogs would be classified as "Treeing Cur"or something but back then we just called them "COONDOGS" Thanks for reading.

Wendel you just can't beat old stories like that. Our dogs today couldn't hold a light for the old dogs back then to go by.We raise hunting dogs true enough but back then it was like you said, they were your companions, helped work the stock, family watch dog plus were dang good tree dogs that helped to suport the family. All of that without ever knowing much about vacines, very little knowledge about any kind of medicine and most of them lived off of table scrapes.Good pictures and story.............Big Ronnie

Wendel, who's little 'foo-foo' dog in the second pic on the right! Seems like we all have some kind of little 'danty' dog around even though we are 'rough and tough' coon hunters and such! :ph43r:

I have a little Maltese at home and I will probably have to put my bride in the grave with Sassy when she is gone! :D

Charles- The little Foo Foo dog at the right in 2nd photo was "Skippy". This little guy was my aunt & uncles Pomeranian that was their house dog. He gave them a lot of entertainment. (That was his best talent) He seemed to be in a lot of our family photos. Also in 2nd photo in background was my uncles Guernsey cow. They were animal lovers for sure. I always enjoyed my visits there.

Great story and great pix buddy. Like you, I've always had a dog around, all my life. We always had cur dogs of some sort, and my uncle coonhunted and was a Bluetick breeder. I owned Blues for years, and still love them, but man!!!!!!! These Kemmer Stock Mt. Curs are the best dogs I've ever seen.
