My vet told me that Benedril 1 teaspoon per 10lbs would help a dog that is in the burning nettles grass we have in some areas that is bad on dogs. I guess it works as pain killers. Thomas Forbes may have more feedback on this because he deals with the nettles grass often. |

Bruce I worked for a vet for several years and I do most all of own vet work with our dogs.Tylnol is not good for a dogs liver. We used Aleve at the vets and I still do it works the best with no bad side affects to your dog.I give 1 pill to a grown dog every 6 hours as needed.I don't give it over 3 days in a row if the dog is no better by that time I go to my vet for something stronger.Hope this helps.Laree |

The medication I give my dog for the stinging nettles:( Dexamethasone ) All I know about this drug is that it's some type of steroid. I don't know if this will help your dogs or not, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your vet about it. |

I don't know much about this myself but a buddy of mine told me that aspirin is good for pain in dogs , he said that he had a old dog that had alot of trouble walking & getting around , when he started the dog on aspirin in just a few days it acted like a young dog again , hope this helps. GOD BLESS, Roger B. |

Dex will help but you need to be careful when giveing it to young dogs it can slow their bone growth down.Asprin is hard on a dogs liver if used to much.Dex is not really for pain but for swelling and allergies itching and such.Hope this helps.Laree |

Laree- I got bottle labeled "CANINE ASPERIN" a while back. Haven't used it to know anything about it yet. Is there any diff between that & human asperin? Is this Canine asperin any safer for dogs? |

I'm surprised he didn't prescribe you some RIMADYL (pronounced RIM AH DILL) It's what my vet supplies me with and it's something even a dog in serious pain will want to chew and take on their own. But after the first day or so, we usually back off the pain killers. If they don't know what is hurting, they are likely to re-injure it. The pain is something they can live with after the first 48 hours, and that pain will keep them immobile. They start moving as they recover. Stitches, staples, anti-biotics, and pain killers........there should be a country song for us!

Canine asperin is not the same as ours it lacks the one thing that is hard on the liver. It works like aleve does.I recamend give some kind of antie acid pill when giveing any knid of pain killers for very long they can all be hard on the stomic. And Dee your so right all this would make a good country song.Another thing Dee is right about if they don't feel pain they can and will make things worse for them selfs.Laree |

I'm good freinds with a couple of vets, and all the ones I know recommend dexamethasone for one, it is a pain killer and a anti inflammatory, it also promotes a "sense of well being". My uncle who is a vet also, told me dex is one of the few drugs in that class that can actually be used to "treat" or help the dog get better. Banamine is also a very good pain killer and antiinflammatory probly a stronger pain killer than dex, it should be mixed with a little B12 to take the burn out of the injection. I keep both in my med kit along with I V's and everything else as these meds can keep a dog from getting to deep in shock. Hope this helps.

I would suggest going on either speedogs.com or masterfox.net and posting this same question. These guys train dogs to run three days in a row during competitions and run into about every kind of injury or illness you can imagine. Most of them are excellent dog men and are experienced in knowing what drugs to apply to about any situation you can think of. It sure can't hurt and I would imagine they could talk from experience in the best meds to give a dog in pain. Everything from snake bites to stab wounds to pulled pads. Give them a shot if you would like and see what you think. |

Talked to another vet today who is a hog hunter also and he said dex is great but do not give to pregnant females, use the banamine instead. Said it's even okay for puppies just not over a long period of time.
