Jimmino and I made a round last night to try and run a rutting coon with Rock, Duke and Max. Max is the 3/4 Wi. Buck owned by Larry Herrington. I am hunting Max a little while waiting for Lady Nugget to come in. Anyway, first thing Max did was introduce himself to a La 'dillar' Not sure if he has ever seen one but I politely let him know they ain't on the menu!
Gathered up and headed down the road. Rock struck off the the right with Duke and Max joining in. This was at 9pm. The dogs cold trailed a walking track 800+yards and treed. We drove way around and when we stopped the dogs were not treeing. Rock and Duke will tree on a tap and go on but we thought they were sure. I could hear the dogs moving in the woods. Rock and Duke came to us for a minute while Max opened and headed back towards where we came from in a wide circle to the east. He has a good bawl/chop on track. Duke and Rock joined in the race which was a moving track by now. They crossed the road and were 3/4 of a mile from us. We made the long ride around and stopped on the road to listen. The track was running now and the dogs were 950 yrds from us headed towards the creek, we hoped. Sure was hoping it was not the cutover coon. Dogs turned back north and we moved down a 4 wheeler trail to listen and let me tell you when 3 big mouth dogs go up and blow the top out of a tree, there ain't a better sound as for as I am concerned. Again we cranked up and got to within 130 yrds of the treed dogs. Jimmino said we have treed this coon 3 times in the same area and not found him. I tied the dogs and began looking. It was a big, viney pine tree. The dogs were trying to tear it down. I told Jimmino that there ain't no way them dogs run a coon for 2 and1/2 hours and pull up short! I backed off in a opposite direction and hit my squaller and, bingo, a glimpse of an eye in the thick vines. We knocked that sucker out and he was a big old long skinny coon, made for running, and was covered with the smell of 'love making' B). We let Max, Rock, Duke and the pup, Rattler get a good taste. This is the first coon we have let Rock and Duke put there mouth on in a while and the only reason they did this time is this coon was already getting poor from the rut. I will have to say that Max can sure run a coon trail. He stayed on course and never made an out and moved the track with speed. I not sure how long it has been since Max was hunted but he did a super job for his first round with me. He is fast and goes hunting. He is loaded with NATURAL ABILITY AND GOLD NUGGET. He reminds me a lot of Calvin late Cajun Nugget dog, Turbo's sire! Many folks have said they would shoot a dog that couldn't tree a coon in 30 minutes. This track was 2.5 hrs and I enjoyed every minute of it! None of those folks have ever hunted behind Jimmino's place and probably never hunted with a cold nose Kemmer dog! ME, I love it!
