We lost Jake to a snake bite. I had him here at my house getting some pups started. I put him in the training pen early yesterday morning along with my Target pup for a stretch and it wasnt long before he bayed instead of treed. Before I could get to them my female pup met me with a bleeding eye. At first I thought she had caught a briar. I put her in the kennel and went for Jake and met him coming to me and I knew then what had happened. It looked like he had three hits on his face. One on each side and one under the eye. He was slaubering and staggering and in bad shape. I helped him to his pen and started benedryl and penicillan and talked with my vet but he lost his battle in the early hours this morning. He was 9 yrs old. My Target female is improving but I'm worried about the eye. Not 100% sure what kind of snake it was because he disappeared before I could get back out there. I turned the place upside down with the front end loader but no luck.......Yet. Ya'll be carefull out there. Ol' Jake will be missed around here. |

Kenny thats a terrible loss and it can happen so fast to any of us. Laree let her house cat outside for a few minutes last week and when he came back in he had 3 bite marks on him that got bad before they got better. We are wanting to hunt Motombo so bad I can taste it but thats the reason I haven't been yet. Hope the Target female gets better. Keep us posted. We sure hate your loss........Big Ronnie |

Kenny, that is sad to hear! Sorry for the loss! I try not to worry about snakes because I would never go to the woods if I did. My dogs and me have been all over snakes but very lucky I guess! That sure is a tough Loss! |

I have been told by several fellas that Gatorade or sweet milk is good to give dogs when bitten, but a head bite is usually fatal. My grandmother called it sweet milk,I don`t really know what that is.Sorry to hear about your dog.If the bite holes were bleeding, most likely it was a rattler. |

Sorry to hear about Jake. Them snakes are bad news. Hutning less in the summer now because of them and yeller jackets...just not worth it. I've been very blessed so far and not going to push my luck this summer. Hope you pup pulls throught it! |

from my experience---copperhead or cottonmouth will swell them real bad and make them sick but rattlers usually kill. BE careful looking for it.....sorry for your loss |

Sure do appreciate the kind words everyone. I have to deal with these things every year. The bad thing is that we have rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths. We have had a pretty wet spring in these parts and they seem to be roaming earlier this year. Most of my encounters with them hunting have been in late August and September when they are lookin for a mate and fattening up for hybernation. I got one last Sept. with 15 and a button that was stretched across a logger road while road hunting. This one yesterday was next to a tree under one of my feeder buckets waiting for an easy meal when Jake happened up on him. My Vet told me that he treats more snake bites in late Mar- April- early May and September -early October than any other time of year. The snakes body temp wont let him move too quick so he just bites instead of trying to get away. Nevertheless, in this part of the country, I wear snake boots year round....no exceptions. |

Just got thru examining Toree, my Target pup. It looks like the snakes fang entered almost dead center of the pupil. It has mushroomed out with a clear sack on top of the eye. The eye is cloudy looking. She doesnt seem to be in a lot of pain but still has some swelling. Ive got her on penicllin. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I never had a dog that lost an eye before. Thanks in advance. |

Kenny, We've never had a hunting dog to lose an eye but we have a Boston Terrier that thinks she is "Betty Bad A$$". The Boston Terrier picked a fight with a much larger dog and got the short end of the stick. By the time everything healed she had lost her left eye. This does not seem to effect her in anyway now. She is just as goofy and spaztic as she has always been. We live in the piedmont/foothills of NC and are only SUPPOSED to have copperheads here but you still watch were you step and Tim wears snakeboots year round too! Hope your female gets better and I understand what it is to lose a good dog! Wendy |

your dog with the eye out should go to vet.. I was told by a doc. that the eyeball itself has no nerve tissue---all surrounding tissue is loaded with nerve tissue to make up for it.If venom spreads out---major problems can happen.after she get used to one eye the other senses with strengthen to compensate and she will do fine |
