What do you fellers do for a hybred loosing its voice? My boys female out of Handsome has been down to a squeak for the past week. She normally has a decent bark. I moved her yesterday after I think I discovered her problem after watching her going into a foaming, squeaking, and chain jerking fit for about a half hour. Evidently, the squirrels are cutting the maple seeds out of the old Maple she is tied to and driving her nuts. I'm hoping they will leave her alone at her new place until she gets her voice back <_< . |

I would put a bark collar on her raandy, if you don't have one & need one, I am comming to crossville today & can bring one for ya ole buddy......... It won't hurt her a bit & it's the only way to keep her from barking long enough to get her full voice back......... |

One of the few good problems to have in a tree dog.I love the hatred these hybreds have for squirrels.I bring home trapped squirrels to tease pups with and have had to put the cage in the cab of the truck till I get ready to take it out because my Creole Jack dog runs lose and if he smells a squirrel in the back of my truck while I am in the house or doing something waiting for it to cool off to work the pups he will eat the back bed of my truck trying to get to the squirrels. He is that way and so is his sons and daughters. Its in the Blood of these Hybreds. Good Luck Randy. I hope her voice clears up but your son should have a great lil squirrel dog in the making. |

Thanks. I've moved her house to a different location and so far so good. I think it was killing her having to watch them working the tree above her house and breaking timber that close to her. I normally don't shoot game close to the house in order to have some close pup trainers, but they were sure making it rough on her

Sometimes a bark collar wont do any good or atleast that has been my luck.It will shut up all my other dogs except for one.The last pup Bear that I raised & kept will bark when he wonts to bark.A bark collar doesnt fase him the least.I dont know what his deal is unless he is just so gritty & tolarent to pain that he dont care.I know that the collar is working to because I can go out there later own to check & you can smell where the hair has been singed & his neck will be red from getting fried.I thought maybe he wasnt going to have good since but he will hunt his but off in the woods & absolutly loves getting on a hog.He is about 11monthes old now & I havent tried the collar on him in the last two or three monthes.May have just been the puppy in him I dont know. |

I've never owned a no bark collar because I always thought the best place for them was on someones noisy yard dog that had to bark at every bicycle, pedestrian or car that passed by his owners house in a town or city. I would have done the same thing Randy did by moving his young hybrid to a location where the squirrels aren't teasing him. His pup has a very strong treeing instinct but he is still very young & impreshionable & doesn't have it all put together yet. I can't see where strapping a shocking device to his neck to stop him from barking at the very game that he will be asked to hunt & tree this fall can be of any benefit to him at all. I don't mean to critize anyones opinions here but I feel very strong about this certain situation. I'm no expert trainer by any means & everyone can do as they see best for their dogs but in this case (Randys pup) I just have to disagree with you guys. Jason knows that I'm kinda "old school" (and hard to retrain) so i hope he will continue to tolerate me here. The old timers that taught me to hunt instilled in me long ago to never do anything deliberatly that may hinder your dogs desire from treeing its game no matter how well he is bred. I'm not against any of the electronic training devices because they have helped us solve some of the age old problems like running trash etc. But I just think we should "look a little deeper" into some our dogs problems & try to "think like a dog" sometimes before we push the button on some of our convenient training devices. Thanks for letting me vent here. JMO Farmboy-1 |

I think she will get better now that you have moved her from her previous location.I had a little female one time that would loose her voice after a while. She could shore spit those barks out & I mean fast.I bet this little female could bark 130 to 140 barks a minute on wood or bayed on a hog. |

So far so good. The squirrels are out of sight and smell range and she has settled down. My boy was worried about her voice was what got me to watching her when I finally got some time off work. I happened to be out in the backyard and noticed the fit she was throwing and got to watching her and seen the squirrels working the trees over her dog house. I went ahead and moved her fearing she would burn herself out with her being a young started dog. They sure had her fired up though. Kind of makes me wonder how long they have been provoking her

Randy- Glad to hear things are working out for your hybrid since you moved her. I agree with Baokell - her voice will come back. Just needs a little time to rest those vocal cords.
Good luck with her this fall. Keep us posted on her progress OK?

We'll do it Wendell. My son Derek is sure proud of them. The female and male both have surprised me with their noses. I had them figured to be more sight dogs, but I guess the cur in them helps out. |
