For a dog to have dew claws front and rear. Is this a sought after trait or is it something you would try to breed out or is something that is not considered too much |

Most all breeders keep front vrs having them removed like you would with some dogs. Breed Standards prefer them. Of course Ideal Dew Claws would be tight and low to the ground more like a 6th or 7th functional toe. |

So does the breeed standard talk about the fronts and the backs or just the fronts? I have heard the old timers talk about the rear dew claws and if they have the rears it seems to make better dogs, more prey drive. Anyone ever heard of that? Anyone seen any truth to that? Some of the best kemmers I have seen have had rear dews too. |

I have them here that has rear single dew claws , double dew claws , & no rear dew claws. I don't see any difference in any of them & I don't pay any attention to them untill it gets cold weather & then I have to watch the ones that have dew claws (expecially the double dews) cause they sometimes get them injured on the hard ground. I preferr no dew claws but never let that judge the dog for me. |

Your 100% right Connie ,dew claws don't count for any thing unless you have your dog in a bench show & all things are equal between two dogs ,dew claws will be the tie breaker, I don't think it's something that most breeders would breed for although some really like them . GOD BLESS, Roger B. |

My dog Jake has double dew claws on the back and single on the front. I have been told by a couple of vets that they serve no purpose and can only snag on brush and cause problems. They sure are a conversation piece when people see him and look funny when he is playing around. Ricky |

I always take the dew claws off. Even on my hounds I take dew claws off, cut a 1/4 of the tail off and cut the pads. Old time hound guys have done that for years around here. The snow gets so crusted and can make a bloody mess of a dogs feet in short order. Just wondering what would cause the dew claws to appear in some breeding and not others. They are supposed to evolve away from that. Must be some pretty strong resessive genes. |

Let me get my 2 cents worth in on this. Like Connie said there is no difference in the performance in a dog with none, single dew claws or double dew claws and I guess it would be up to the man that owns the dog to decide where they go or stay. Long time ago the old dog people said that a snake bite wouldn't afect a dew clawed dog. I personally don't believe none of this. I do breed for them and I wish every dog I own was double dew clawed but this is a matter of opinion. I'm talking about back legs now because front legs don't mean a thing to me. Robert also has and still does breed for them too. Some of the older dog people (like me) think that dew claws on a dog is kinda like fender skirts on a 64 chevy Impala. The fender skirts had nothing to do with one running faster than one without fender skirts but for some reason lots of people wanted them. Our Ole Trouble II is double dew clawed and they are low on his leg like more toes. I think you could breed him to a fence post and you would get yellow dew clawed little fence post. So far we have never had a puppy from him that wasn't double or single dew clawed. But like I said it is a matter of ones opinion because I don't think they help the dog in any way as for as being a dog other than I like them and I just don't never keep a pup for myself that don't have them............Big Ronnie

I like nice Heavy Rear Dew Claws. Rear are the only referred to in the Standards. Of course I personally like a dog that has nice tight feet and heavy dews that can win on the Bench and in the Woods. I have culled very nice hunting dogs that had flat feet just because I hate Flat feet that much lol |

My preference when I keep a pup is (rear)double dew claws with a natural bob tail. I like double dew claws over single also. This doesn't mean a thing about being a better dog than one don't have this. It just means that I prefer a double dew clawed natural bob tailed dog. I liked them fender skirts on them 64 chevys tooooo. I don't know if ya'll have ever noticed it but a dog that has single dew claws will pass this down to some of his or her pups true enough but a (double dew clawed male dog) is super strong in passing this down to his pups.........Big Ronnie |

So if that dog is passing physical trait, don't you think he is passing hunting traits also? |

If I am looking to get a pup from a Dog I like, I look for the pup that takes the most after it. If the Daddy is black with Dew Claws then I am looking for the Pup that is Black with Dew Claws. SO they don't make a difference in the ability but are def part of the package if you are looking for traits that are being passed to the pup. |

Robert told me he tried to include dew claws as a preferred physical trait since he started his breeding program and now he says a lot of folks are trying to breed away from them. I like them and will pick a weaning pup with the physical apperance that I like including dew or, even better, double dew claws. Now if I raise a litter for myself, I only pick the game crazy pups no matter the sex, color, dew claws or no dew claws. If I get the best of both worlds, looks and abililty, then that is even better. BUT, game crazy pups has always been my first and foremost trait that I look for. I start my 'hat shaking' with a 6 wk old pup and introducing them to hides and such. It don't take long to start seeing prey drive. With the natural treeing ability these Kemmers and Hybrids have, these prey driven pups start at a very early age. Edited by TURBO DOG, Jan 7 2010, 02:56 PM.
