Feral Hog Seminar

I spent the day yesterday trying to learn more about my adversary, the feral swine. Our local Ag Agent sponsored the all day event and had people from all over the state there discussing the feral hog situtation.
No one knows for sure, but the estimates are that Texas has anywhere from 1.5 to 4 million hogs on the loose.
They said that if a sow is bred at 6 months of age, giving birth to 6 piggies consisting of 3 males and 3 females, and then those sows repeat the same process, so on and so forth, that within 2 years, that original sow would be responsible for over 1000 pigs? Or so they said.
All I know is, there's a bunch of them and the state of Texas has declared war on them. One of the speakers was a game warden and she said they want them dead, by just about any means possible. Exterminate them with extreme prejudice was the rally cry for the day.
They even advocated the use of night vision and suppresed weapons (with ATF approval of course). The best means to utilize is the helicopter and one of our state game hunters was there talking about his expereinces on both land and in the air. I'm surprised he can even hold up a weapon as they use shotguns loaded with buckshot and the took out approximately 12,000 hogs this past year from the air. He said after a day of shooting, his shoulder is black and blue.

I've been on hiatus until I get my truck fixed and hopefully that will be next week? Then we'll return to action and put the dogs back on the ground.

For most people around the country, hogs are a bonus animal and considered a trophy animal that can be hunted year round. But here in Texas, they are a nuisance and fast becoming Public Enemy #1.
In our capital city of Austin, the hogs have moved into the expensive subdivisions and are destroying the landscaped yards of the rich and powerful. How well do you think that that is going over?

The ranch I hunt did a helicopter hunt 2 weeks ago and were able to kill around 150 hogs in one day. They plan on doing it again in 90 days.

Guess I better get my truck going ASAP!!!

they supposedly did a helicopter hunt in fannin county around me,but i never herd any results out of it...Hogs have did us a favor, have more places to hunt than I have in 15 years,,when I first started hunting we could hunt anywhere then growth limited us ,but now the hogs are getting a lot of our hunting ground back for us...So the hogs do not bother me at all....lol

Oklahoma has been using choppers for 15 years on the wild hogs right across the Red River from me. They have more hogs now than when they started. Its is very expensive to operate a helecopter, just try renting one for a day. I think the state would be better off to put a bounty on them and try to keep them under control rather than try to eradicate them. Hogs do a lot of damage for sure but they also bring a good deal of income to some areas by hunters. I dont think we have to worry about the demise of feral swine anytime soon. They have been trying to eradicate the coyote for many years and I can't tell a dent has been made in the population yet.

I hope evey state would invest with hogs... Na Dee just run them all to south MS ill take em....lol :D The game wardens are always griping about a hog problem here and not being able to catch them in traps but they shut us down in the best hog hunting public lands in south ms. The made a rule no hog dogs. Any every other hunting dog is welcome but hog dogs. A guy at work said his whole family deer hunted that his whole life and they quit hunting there nd joined a club because of the hogs. There wasnt a prob with them when we hunted it heavy with dogs and its only been 3 years so yes I hope they do take over and they beg us back it did nothing but help the hog hunters and hurt the whining deer hunters that got us kicked out because they called jackson gripping about us silly11

They figured the helicopter cost came out to $34 per hog. I'd settle for a little diesel
re-imbursement! :D

With work being bad, lots of people who can't find a job, might start hog hunting with a 20.00 bounty on each hog. I believe that would get me out of the house and into the field ^o) :P :P
