Tradewater's store story reminded me of the old store up the road when i was just a kid. There was a short church pew in front where the old men would set and shoot the breeze. As we became teenagers we called it the dead pecker bench :D Used to make em mad when we would say that while they were sittin on it.
There is a new store there now but the bench is still there. Been there at least since 1960. I still wont sit on it silly11

When I was young my only mode of transportation was horseback. My 2 buddies and I decided to go to the county fair at Providence, Ky. on Saturday. We stopped by the local moonshiner and got a jug of white lightning and tied it on our horses. We hit that jug pretty hard and by the time we made it to town we had big plans. We went to the drug store to buy some condoms. Back then they were kept behind the counter and you had to ask for them. We were all too shy so we finally flipped and I lost. I got a dozen and put them in the saddle bag and we went to the fair with high hopes of using all 12. We got us some girls and were giving them rides behind us in the saddle. I was riding a crazy grey mare that would spook and run away at any minute if you weren't a good rider. My girl kept insisting to ride by herself and although I knew better I did'nt want those condoms to go to waste so trying to please her I finally let her ride by herself. Sure enough, that crazy mare got spooked and started running wide open thru all the exibitor tents scattering people and produce everywhere. The girl fell off in a bunch of flowers but the horse kept running till she finally knocked down the garden produce tent, got tangled and I was able to catch her. Lost my jug of white lightening, lost the girl, and made everybody in the entire fairgrounds mad as hell. Caught my horse and headed home as fast as possible. A dozen condoms sure last a long time when the whole world is mad at you.

Another Smokey story, little one.
Close to 50 years ago my good cat dog had met an early demise so was breaking a young dog. I heard that a fellow about 15 miles north of me had trapped a nice tom bobcat and had it in a cage. Took a friend with me to go talk to this guy, he wanted $50 for the cat, at the time NY had a $25 bounty so no matter what I'd only be out $25 bucks so told the fellow I'd be back in a week or so for the cat. Shortly before that I knew the Smith boys had been asked by the University of NH in Durham to try to capture a live cat, thay wanted to study why a cat born in the wild would only live a week or so in captivity.
Long story leading up to the story.
When Roger & I got back to Salem we headed into the local gathering place, the Ondawa Hotel, just as we started in I asked Roger to keep his mouth shut about that cat, yea, he didn't have both feet inside when he started. WE !!! we just bought a live bobcat, no pun intended but the cat was out of the bag so to get Smokey started I said, I've no idea how I'll get a collar on that cat to lead him with. Of course Smokey's long sheeeeeeiit, I've done that many times. Ya just keep staring that cat right in the eye, open the door and just reach in and slap that cat up beside the head then just put the collar on, no problem. Old Lee Williams sat on the stool next to Smokey and had a comeback. Sheeeeeiit Smokey after you slap that cat beside the head just what are you going to have left to put the collar on with. All for naught, the cat died anyway.
