There don't seem to be much conversation on the board now so this would be a good time to talk about litter size. What size litters do you like? We have saw from 3 to 13 in the past years and I remember a little while back when Charle Fasola's (Birdy gyp) had only 1 pup. We always shoot for a litter of 8 at the tops. If I could pick the exact size everytime my number would be 6 pups. The smaller the litter the bigger the pups are when they are born, the healthier they are, the faster they grow off and the easier they are on the momma dog and. A good healthy momma dog can handle 8 with no problem but she can handle 6 easier and they will look better and grow faster is what I'm saying and this is where a good looking pup starts at. A good example is the Tank pup we have here now. Granny only had 4 pups and she laid on one the first day. When they were born they all 4 looked like they were 2 weeks old then and Tank is 10 weeks old today and is big enough to be in the 3rd. grade. What size litter do ya'll like?..............Big Ronnie |

Ronnie, I am like you, I like a litter of 6 pups. My female I had here around 10 years ago had 11 pups and raised all of them, but I prefer smaller litters. |

Old Rat will do better with 7 or 8 little mice and you need to have Old Rat on some type of milk aid now so she will keep plenty of milk for all 11 boobies. ................Big Ronnie

Im with you Ronnie! Any more than 6 will pull a mommy down in a hurry! I also like to start helping mommy ween the pups off after about the 4th week.I will start spraying her tits down with witch hazel about the 5th week to help dry them up & draw them back up in place.I dont like to see a females sack sagging afterwards because her pups was left hangging on to long. |
