I'd normally be posting in the pictures section, but I have to be honest, I haven't gotten to take a picture on the last two hunts. I hate to blame my bad luck on anything other than my dogs not getting the job done, but these same dogs have been catching hogs for me for quite a while now and I doubt they are the problem? I'm not sure how it is for the other hog hunters, but for us, with all this rain we've had this spring, the grass is thick and about waist high. Last week we went out and the dogs started several races but were unable to get a bay long enough for us to get there and turn the bulldogs loose. I know they were on hogs, my dogs don't trash and one came back with a pretty good cut on her. We, ourselves, didn't even see the hogs on that trip. We went out this morning and got into a large group of hogs and the hogs scattered in the weeds and the race was on. If I stood up on the atv I could see the backs of the hogs as they ran through the grass, but my dogs are only 2 feet off the ground and don't have that advantage. Long story short, no caught hogs today, but another dog with cuts. Very frustrating! I talked to Leslie this morning and he's having the same problem up there at his place. He can see the backs of the hogs, but the dogs are blind at ground level and are having a heck of a time keeping the bay intact. He summed it up though when he reminded me, these aren't catch dogs, they are bay dogs, and to bay, they have to see 'em. That is true, I don't want them to blindly go charging in, that's why we have pits. Has anyone else experienced this or is it really my potlickers to blame?

Same way over here, plus,it is so dry,we ain`t had no rain in a while, the grass is high also, between the sawgrass and VIRGIN briars its hard to keep up with the hogs, plus it is 100+ here everyday so it has to be a short mornin hunt, the dogs will come back all cut up from briars so they seem to quit a little early, but it is not your dogs! Good luck. |

I read one time over on Alton's site where a Texas hunter hunted hogs at nite. I guess he liked the cooler temps at nite vs. daytime. Iv'e never hunted hogs but I imagine that you'd find them in diff areas at nite than in daytime? Any of you guys ever hunt them at nite? What would be the pros vrs. cons hunting hogs at nite if there is any. Got to be more dangerous for sure! |

For us, it seems to depend on the land you have access to. If all you have this time of year is crop land, then more than likely you'll have to hunt at night when the hogs are in the crops. For me, I'm blessed to have year round access to a rather large ranch. The hogs live there 24/7, it's just up to me and the dogs to find them. I'm sorta like a bass fisherman, I've learned over the last couple of years to pattern where the feed, where they are likely to bed up during the day, or in dry times, what watering holes they prefer to hang out near. And because of this, I haven't had to hunt at night in about 5 years. We just turn out at first light and hunt until the dogs tell us it's time to go home. |
