Good puppy hunt

I originally typed up this story this morning after we got home and had a headache coming on during the process. By the time I got it all typed up and hit submit, I lost my internet connection and lost the story. Shortly therefter I took some pills for the headache and just got up from a much needed nap.

I don't know if this story will live up to the hype Big Ronnie was talking about, but I'll give it my best shot.

With yesterdays mechanical problems behind us, Katie, Emily, and I loaded 6 Kemmers and 2 catchdogs this morning and rolled out of here at 0600 heading to the ranch for what we hoped to be a good hunt for the puppies. To me, that meant a chance for them to get out and run with the older dogs a bit and just get a feel for how we hunt off of the atvs and all. I was hoping also to get on a group of sows with their young or maybe a small hog by itself. I wanted them to have a caught hog in front of them that they could get physical with but not one so big that it could hurt them in return.

Let me say one thing about the weather real quick. Yesterday, it was HOT and HUMID from the get go and that makes for a miserable hunt. This morning it was only about 3 degrees cooler than yesterday, but the humidity must have been a lot lower as it was very nice out, especially with the slight breeze that was blowing. Even after we were done and loading the dogs back at the truck around 9, it was nice and cool in the shade.

After loading all the dogs on the atvs we headed the couple of miles to the pasture where they have been seeing some hogs. We let the dogs loose in the same place as yesterday, but this time with no mechanical problems. :P
(The 4 older dogs were wearing GPS collars while Bonnie & Clyde had on the old style tracking collars.)

The pasture we were hunting in is fairly open with mostly native grasses growing and the average height was probably 2 feet or less, so the dogs had pretty good visiblilty to not only see any hogs they might find but it also helped the 2 pups maintain a visual on the older dogs. There are scattered clumps of brush and trees throughout the pasture which provide the hogs with cover for bedding and it has the wet creek for water.
The dogs were out hunting like they should and the 2 pups were having a great time trying to keep up. You could tell that they are pups as it was a grand time in the woods today for them. We often forget when dealing with young dogs that they are no different in a lot of ways than children. Everything they encountered today was a new experience, so just running through the fields with plants they hadn't ever seen or smelt of was something new. Even when the older dogs went through a gate leading into the next pasture, the pups weren't sure how to squeeze through it the first time. But the main thing is, they were doing their best to keep up with the other dogs and were not hanging out at the 4 wheelers.

We had been out hunting for about 30 minutes when all of the dogs took off to the north and I lost sight of them. We waited a few minutes to see if they'd return as this is normal for them to do. I was keeping an eye on the GPS and when the 4 dogs with GPS collars got to around the 800 yd mark, we lost the signal. We took off after them and found Clyde along the way. As we had too much ground to cover, I threw him on Katie's atv and proceeded to the other 5 dogs. I attempted to take a short cut across the wet creek, which is about 6 feet across and maybe 4 inches deep but promptly buried my 650 up to it's belly in black silt. I hooked the tow strap to Katies 400 and the 650 and with Emily at the controls of the 650, they managed to yank mine from the slime. I wish I had taken the time to video that as I was a proud poppa at that moment. :D
Now free from the creek, we had to take the long way around so it took us maybe 20 minutes to finally reach the dogs. When we pulled up to within about a hundred yards of them we found that they weere bayed in some really thick brush and from the sounds of it they had a group of hogs bayed as the hogs were making almost as much noise as the dogs were. And the best part was, Bonnie was right there in the middle of it all. ;)
I got the sunglasses turned on and proceeded in. About half way to them I yelled for the catchdogs and they ran past me into the fray. Then it went so quite I all you could hear were the birds singing? I hoped the hogs had just scattered and were still hiding nearby as they have a tendency in doing and sure enough Clyde, who I had turned loose as soon as we stopped and ran to the pack, opened up on a hog in hiding. The other dogs went to him and they ended up catching about a 40 lb pig. PERFECT! It was squeeling, the pups were going crazy, and I was getting it all on video.
Now let me say, doing this all by myself is a chore sometimes and today was one of those times. I had to fight my way into the brush, the sunglasses kept fogging up so I couldn't see where I was going, then I had to deal with Tyson so the pups could have their fun, and then after all that I tried to take a couple of pictures with a camera. Only one of which came out clear and not out of focus. I'm not sure if I hurried the shots or if there wasn't enough light or there was so much brush that the camera had trouble focusing, or maybe both combined? But with the help of my buddy at work on Monday I hope to extract some good still shots from the video.

After letting the pups have some fun on the pig, I fought my way back to the 4 wheelers and that wasn't easy trying to lead 2 bulldogs out of that stuff. When I got back, Katie looked at me asked "Dad, are you alright?" I was pooped! :P

All in all, it was a great hunt. The pups got to hunt out with the big dogs, we got on a group of hogs, and ended up catching a perfect size hog for the young dogs to work. No dogs were cut, no mechanical problems, and we were in and out before 9.

Best of all, Bonnie stayed with the big dogs for the entire race and was there at the bay doing her job when I arrived. I can't be disappointed in Clyde for falling off the race, he's just a pup on his second hunt. He certainly did his part once he got to the bay and showed me again that he likes the taste of hog. He did alright in my book and should only get better.

I will try to get a picture uploaded later tonight but the video will have to wait until Monday as my internet connection here at the house is worse than dial up, so I'll have to do it at work.

I meant to put in there that I realize that a race of about 800 - 1000 yards may not be much of a race back east, but here in South Texas where we have a large hog population, that is a fairly long race for us. Anything much further than that and we'd just rather pick up the dogs and put them on another hog, or two.
I have jokingly told Mr. Day before that if I had a dog that ran a hog for 4 hours he could have it, iffin' I didn't shoot it first! :P

I would have been mad to if I had typed all that and lost it. I'm bad about makeing up my post and then going to photo bucket to get my picture and put it on here and then the very last thing I do is punch the wrong button and lose it all. Dee thats a good story, keep up the good work with them..........Big Ronnie

Great hunt for the pups and 2 pretty daughters that will someday break daddys heart and marry.... ;) Just picking Dee...you are a very lucky man to have such a place to hunt and also have 2 daughters who love being out there with you. The 3/4 Sport ll pups seem to be catching on and I expect them to only get better with more hogs caught. Great Job

I bought Laree a 400 artic cat this year and she loves it. It rides a lot smoother than my honda 450. She don't like mine and I don't like hers so we are both happy. Great pictures Dee and I'm like Calvin. I think they will get better each time out. Clyde might take a time or two to adjust to the heat and for him to realize what makes him get left behind..........Big Ronnie

Here are 3 videos from yesterday. The first one is of me going into the bay, then it breaks, and all goes quiet. Just as I am turning the glasses off, you hear Clyde bark as he found a hog in hiding. I then had to go through the process of turning the glasses back on. The dogs knew the hog was up in the thick stuff and as you can see, even the bulldogs were starting to get worn out. But I wanted the pups to get a reward and realize that there are pigs in the middle of all those barking dogs so I let it go on longer than normal.
The third video was taken back at the 4 wheelers as my daughters and I were getting dogs loaded for the trip back to the truck.

This is of the girls, after the hunt and back at the truck. Are they good or what? :D

What doesn't help is with this humidity the glasses kept fogging up and I couldn't see anything with them on. :ermm: There's one spot, I think on the 2nd clip, where I say "Aww, that hurt!" A dang limb full of thorns whacked me on the right side of my face and I had to pull it free from my skin, all while I had an 85 lb pitbull on a leash. :D Oh, the joys of hunting with dogs. I guess there is something to be said of all those smart hunters out there that never leave the warm confines of a heated deer stand? :P

I've been trying to train these dogs of mine to drag the hogs out in the open and closer to the 4 wheelers, but it's a work in progress.
