what ever this critter is---it was on deer trail camers--couple miles from houses. Compared to coon it is about 2-3 times as big.meat eater---dont bother deer feeders. judging it by dogs size it weighs around 30-35 lb. track is big as a large hound. have not got any pics of face. this is the only pic we got so far. ANY ideas on what it is?? |

I would say house cat. I know a house cat wouldn't have a foot as big as a hound but the picture sure looks like a cat to me. Keep us posted. Very interesting. |

Apope- Iv'e heard about guys trying to hunt Fischers with dogs. Are they hard to keep treed? Will they go under ground? Just curious not trying to hi-jack your thread Mr. Messer. Mr. Messer- any chance somebody turned that thing loose on you guys in the woods? Been known to happen with other kinds of critters. DNR don't tell everything they do. I go with cat, those trail cams make animals look kind of strange at times. Only way a fisher would be in Ky, would be if someone turned loose one that had been kept as a pet. |

I would say Fisher, also called Fishercat, except seems like MAYBE a bit too much leg. I think maybe your weight guess might be pretty high. Footprint size is also a giveaway, a fisher has feet large enough for three critters the same size. When Baxter was young and I took him to the woods when I was cutting firewood he ran and treed several tracks that I was sure was Fisher, tree until I got fairly close then off they would go again, never did see one stay treed. Albert knows what a fisher looks like, he has plenty in his area as we do. They are the only fur really worth trapping except muskrat in this area. |

I've blowed it up, and looked it over several times, and it still looks like a plain old cat to me, I've never heard of a fisher in Kentucky, and hope I never do. I would set a live trap with some cat food, and I would almost bet you get a big persian cat in the trap. Edited by James_Jamison, Nov 5 2010, 06:46 PM.

now that we had rain---the tracks are plain and i want to get a pic of them. they are way too big for cat. not like anything i ever run across.dont know if it is the reason for it but squirrels are gone...one here and there.didnt see many young turkey this year and either the rabbit population dwindled or my beagles are runnin for congress.....hard to get a rabbit goin. am hoping to get better pic of that thing but it is not interested in deer feeders. deer season opens in a week and i will shoot it or try to get a camera on guts---it likes them. |
