Dave- I complain a lot about winter here in the midwest but I know you guys have to deal with a lot more snowfall than we do here. Wanted to ask you how far on the avg. would you say that lake snow affect will travel over onto land in your area & cause problems for people in NY.? I assume it would be the wet heavy type snow right? Just curious. |

Hard for people to imagine winter here unless you've been in one of our "WHITE_OUTS", that's snow driven by high wind off Lake Ontario at a rate of about six inches an hour, lucky to see the hood ornament, I-81 closed many times to emergency vehicles only. Rarely have heavy wet snow and usually not much accumulation right close to the lake but inland as elevation rises it really starts adding up. A few years ago about 15 miles east set the US record with 96 inches in a 24 hour period. Many times we'll get three or four feet in one storm and within a couple days it's settled by at least a third. So far this winter we've had well over five feet, about 40" one storm, then rain took most of that away, right now we've got a little over two feet in the yard, more up east. Attaching a couple pictures that I might have posted before but a good example of our snowfall. It's a John Deere log skidder parked about 50 feet from the road and left all winter, at one time you could only see about three inches of the cab. |

Every Xmas we spend over in Salem, NY right on the Vermont border where most of our kids live, this year we got snowed in due to the north-easter that hit the east coast. Couldn't get away until mid-day today (Mon), we didn't get ten miles and ran right out of snow, got home to Pulaski and not a flake of new snow. Now that's a change, for sure. |
