During WWII shells were scarce for hunting but we had a small female begal. In the feilds we were farming we would cut cotton stalks and plant cover crops, vetch and peas. While planting I would hunt around the edge of the field. A rabbit would come out into the field about 40 yards, stop, lick it's feet, then jump and flatten out. The dog would run over it and the rabbit would stay flat. I would keep my eye on it and walk close, shoot it with a 22 Remmington, Model 41 single shoot. If there was ever a $50,000 dog she would fit the bill. Seldom did she lose the rabbit. I would count my shells at the end of the day and know how many rabbits I was bringing home. Have you ever seen this happen? I have talked to a lot of people and none of them have ever seen anything like this. Coach 18 |

Ray - I don't quite understand what you have described. I have seen rabbits hop up on a log & lick their feet when they were way - way - way ahead of the hounds & I have had rabbits flatten out when they were in very sparse cover & they seen me coming close to them. But haven't seen what you have. I sure miss the beagles. |
