I took this photo today 3/6. As we have predominately west winds causing an ice-pack
along our east shoreline. When we get strong winds the waves, many times up to 10 footers, roll under the ice until there's not room between ice-pack and bottom. The water pressure just erupts up through the ice bringing bottom sand with it. As the water falls on the ice it keeps forming the volcano. The core stays open and usually forms a light cap on top. About 15 years ago a family, dad, mom, son and daughter was taking photos off Selkirk Park. The son climbed on top of one of these, about 15 ft. high for sister to take his picture. It caved in and the son wasn't found until late spring / early summer. All of us charter captains kept an eye out for him while we trolled for brown trout. Lake Ontario is 55 miles wide and 250 miles long so wind can blow up pretty big waves.
The picture is of a small volcano and arrow shows open top.
