http://www.radioiowa.com/2011/02/24/iowa-senate-jumps-into-dispute-over-raccoon-hunting/ Wendel, this is a good reminder for us to check with our local hunting laws. Years ago, I was told by the Ms wildlife and fisheries that if I went on a sq or coon hunt with dogs, even without a gun, that I had to have a license because I was participating in the hunt. The agent also told me that if I was sitting on the tailgate listening to dogs run a coon that I also could be written up depending on who was checking me. I simply bought a license to eliminate any problems. Even in this article the law that was passed was for kids under 16 would not need a license. I assume adults still would need a license even as spectators. |

Thank you for the HIGH-TECH help Charles in posting this link. When I was a kid a hunting license covered you for every game animal except deer & waterfowl. If you were under 16 & were with a licensed adult you were covered. It used to be common for the older coonhunters to take school kids along on hunts on Saturday nites. We had a blast shining the tree to see who could find the coon first leading the dogs & taking turns shooting out the coons to the dogs. And after the hunt my aunt always had something delicious for us hungary kids to eat. Now jump ahead to the mid 70's when fur prices went sky high & everybody was after the coons. The Iowa coonhunters assn. & Iowa trappers assn. got a bill past that anybody who wanted to hunt or trap furred game had to purchase a high priced FUR HARVESTER license to try & slow down the number of coon killed by regular hunters who were contributing to the demise of the coon population in our state. Now 30 years later the coon population has reastabolished itself (without the DNR) the fur prices are pretty low compared to the 70's & this law is still on the books because the state can still make some extra money off of us. At least now when a kid goes along coonhunting they can hunt without fear of running into a game warden! Ain't it funny how money can ruin things for people? |

Wendel, Once a law is on the books it stays there, they just pass new laws to cover a current situation. Our biggest problem is that the rural dweller has very little voting power and here is where the very large majority of private gun owners live. We know TV wields tremendous power on the voters and there are no TV stations based in the rural areas, they are all in the larger urban areas and portray any/all guns a terrible threat to society. Every time someone is killed or injured TV shows a hand gun regardless if the person was victim of attacke with a knife or bat. In NY State, New York City has the power, few consider we have the largest State park in the US and millions of acres in upstate NY the power is still in the cities. An example of urban mentality, There was a recent post on the computer where a fellow wrote, "Stop all hunting to kill animals for food, just go to the store and buy meat "MADE" there so no animals had to suffer." How do you deal with people like that? We should start pointing out a few facts. After WW2 a Japanese Admiral said they had wanted to attack our northwest coastline but knew that there would be an American citizen with a gun behind every bush. Even though our politicians don't recognise that power I'm sure foreign powers do. |
