Hey ya'll, my son is in need of a good farm dog to help protect his chickens and other livestock. Any suggestions on which breeding within the Kemmer family might be best suited for this type work ? He would prefer a pup , but might consider a young dog. Thanks, |

Gary, I would think that most any line of Kemmer dogs would make a good farm dog! Maybe something with a little Yellow Jack would work! Vast majority of folks can't let dogs run loose anymore! Glad to see some still can and want to use canines for varmint control!! |

I would think the hybrids would do good for this also. |

I think most any of them would do but I have got to agree with James on the hybrids. Fred Jr is our #1 guard dog at our house. He can be inside the house and if a dog gets loose outside he will be the first one too know about everytime. There is nothing that moves around here that he don't know about. They are not scared of the devil his self either............Big Ronnie |

Thanks for the suggestions. I spoke with my son last night and he wants to get a pup, and I don't have any experience with the Hybrids. So, who should I check with on a well bred Hybrid pup ? thanks again |

I think a hybrid would do good too. Just be careful around chickens. They are a bit gamey if you know what I mean ha! Robert, Larry King, Rick, Calvin and several others have nice hybrids. |

Full blood Kemmer curs work well. My friend has chickens and he uses Kemmers to keep out all predators, most of his are Hunter, B.J. Buck and of course Blondie III bred. Most every time I talk to him they have treed or caught a coon or possum. The only thing they don't control are the ones that fly. |

A friend of mine raises game chickens. He has a kemmer cur and it won't even let a hawk come down, much less coons, foxes or other varmints. It's a cool site to see that dog watch a hawk circling above. Mike |

also i have one and if raised with chickens they'll be fine. You may have to scold them a time or two.one thing that works well on a pup thats a few months old is to let a mama hen with chic's do a little flogging.it won't hurt it ,just a few seconds and break it up.That's usually all i takes.I'd want the pup to be 3 or 4 months old though.and that if a stern voice or little swat doesn't stop the chasing. If raised from a small pup I usually don't have any problem |
