I went to check my feeders the other day & got a big surprize! As i was walked up to my feeder I saw a squirell take off over the hill. I walked on down to my feeder to check for tracks & stood their about 2 minutes looking. As I turned to walk away I heard a rattler go to singing. Scared the crap out of me as I jumped away. My heart just about stoped because I didnt know where he was or if I was gonna land on top of him. He was laying on the ground coiled ready to strike about 3 feet away from where I had been standing. Laying right in under an ivy bush & he had been waiting on the squirell I ran off. I never would have saw him if he hadnt of sounded off. He wasnt very big but he was big enough to cause my heart to race like a sewing machine.![]()

I called my buddy the other evening to see if we were gonna run a bear that night. I told him about killing a rattler earlier then he replied by telling me about the 5 rattlers he had already killed since last week. He hunts ever night of the week so he's out there in the woods a lot when its cooler & when there crawling the most. After I got to his house that evening he began to tell me about killing another one after he got off the phone with me earlier. We turned loose about 10pm that night & the dogs crossed over the roughest part of the mountain. I had to climb to the top of that mountain twice that night trying to get up with one of my dogs. This mountain was straight up & rocky in a lot of places. I just had to pick & choose my route according to what was a head of me. All I could think about during the climb was the rattlers that he had killed also. I can tell you I was shinning my light good & making sure if any was around I was gonna spot them first. I always wear my snake leggons this time of year but I still worry sometimes about getting struck in the arm or chest climbing up these step parts. I didnt get my dog the first time climbing up the mountain but the second time I did at 3:30am. I can tell you I was wore out by then & about 3 hrs long past my prefered quittting time. This time he came to me limping & holding his right front leg up. First thing I thought of was that he had fallen off a rock cliff & broken his leg. After seeing him up close though I saw that his leg was swollen all the way down to his toes & I knew then that he had been snake bitten. Told my buddy afterwards that Im having second thoughts about bear hunting on that mountain anymore this time of year! I never have been snake bitten knock on wood but have had my share of yellow jacket stings. |

Hog them things are dangerous. If you get close enough to them you are bit and this is very easy to do because they blend in so well with where ever they are. A rattlesnake bite in hot weather is not good. They tell me to stay calm if you are bit (I BET I WOULD). Thats like daddy has copd and last yr. while in the hospital he couldn't get no air and the dr. kept telling him to be calm and stop getting excited when he couldn't get no air. Daddy looked up at him and told him if he could get his breath he would get up and choke him till he turned blue and see just how calm he stayed while he couldn't get no air. How is the dog doing?............Big Ronnie |

I have had a lot of dogs bit by rattlesnakes and was biy myself by a copperhead once. There was a older man years ago that would run a couple of wires from his tractor, one hot wire and one ground wire, and touch them on either side of the wound shocking himself. It worked. So, Nova Systems came up with a stun gun with adapters built in and a low voltage just for that use. It says that you really need to apply it within the first 3 hours. The sooner the better. I have seen the snake catchers use it on themselves before and always thought that I would get one, but never have. I had a reaction to the last snake bite and can't take another treatment, so I always figured I'd use the shock method. The doctors said I had the reaction because I was around horses so much and the serum was developed from horses. You might check on that Hog, especially going up and down them mountains. |
