Wendel what is the corn up your way looking like? Our watered corn is alright or atleast pretty good but all the dry land corn id burnt up. We will be cutting corn in the dry land before the end of the month it looks like. To add to the problem of it not turning out very good also it will come off a lot earlier than usual and everyone has it booked for sale starting a month later than it's going to come off. This creates a problem of where we are going to go with the corn of the farmers that don't have grain bins. They will work something out. Like I told some of the boys today, I have never yet saw it left in the field because of no where to go with it. Our cotton is looking pretty good all over so far. The corn was older and needed rain more than the younger cotton did. We got some rain last week but it was too late for some of the corn.........Big Ronnie |

Ronnie I was wondering how crops were doing down your way cause we have heard about parts of Texas burning up & saw the Mississippi floodin pictures on television of La. In this part of our state crops are lookin pretty good so far. Corn & beans both. Corn is bout shoulder high with good dark deep green color to it. We have had plenty of rain earlier. Will see what July & Aug. brings us during polination period. NOW in western part of this state along the Missouri river area they have been having terrible flooding taking out thousands of acres of crop land not to mention several towns along the way that had to be evacuated. The same thing happening on the Neb. side & in both of the Dakotas. Minot Dakota saw the worst flooding in 40 years this spring. All this ground will be under water for couple months they say. We were told that there was an unusally large amount of snowfall last winter up north & this flooding is happening because of it. And they also got a lot of rain up there this spring but we are also told there will be an investigation of the Army Corp of Engineers when all this flooding is over to see if they opened flood gates too late or what! In nothern Wis. & parts of Indiana & Ohio I have been told that they have been extremely wet this spring & very very late gettin crops in. Seems like where ever you want to go its drought or floodin don't it?

Wendel, you talk about sholder high corn, wow. I've always heard knee high by the 4th of July around here, now days most corn that was able to be in on time is better then that but it's been quite wet and more cool days & night then usual. The dairy farmers with a 1000 head and more lease land from the folks that have sold out and truck corn & hay sileage 10 miles or so. Plenty of fairly flat good land but our growing season is quite short. Funny how the Amish can come in, buy up older neglected farms and even some fair sized farm that couldn't make it and seem to do pretty well. |

There have been a lot of farmers in our area to go under in the last few years. Some due to just plain bad luck from weather or price changes from bad to worse for their crops and some due to liveing too high on the hog thinking there would never be no end to it. A lot of my work is out on the farms in the harvest season and I can see some big changes that have been made in the last few years. For instance most all of the farmers that I work with today are working people theirselfs and work right beside what hired help they have day in and day out. They know how to cut all of the corners they can to cut down on expense and labor is one of the big expenses they have cut down on by doing most of the work theirselfs instead of rideing around in a Kings Ranch edition pickup giveing orders out over the radio like some used to do thats not farming any longer. They used to have a tractor and a piece of equipment for each job but thats not the case any longer either. I like working for working people better anyway. They seem to know more about whats going on and how to do what ever it takes to survive.............Big Ronnie |
