Man everyone has there favorite and a wide range of opinions. If I was going to hunt from Coyote to deer something from 243-270 is going to be hard to beat. If you are going to shoot at any distance and would like something real flat, a 25-06 or 257 weatherby would sure do the trick. And you can buy a decent range of bullet weights (85-115 gr) that would do well on Yotes up to whitetail.

But that being said a .243 and .270 would do just as well lol.

I have a 7mm-08 that I really like. it's in a Tikka T3 model. The 7-08 is a short action, light recoil rifle. It isn't as flat as a 243, 25-06 or 270 but is a lot flatter than a 30-30 and is a pleasure to shoot. My next straight deer rifle though will be a 25 cal. Either 25-06 or 257 weatherby.

I'll agree w/ Thomas on most of them except the .243, just never liked it. The 7mm-08 would be a fine choice as well as the 25-06. I would pick between those two.

25-06, 257 Roberts, 6mm Rem, 243, 308, there are alot of good choices. I had a 25-06 custom built in 1988, and it has killed everything from deer down to bull frogs, and everything in between. My son has killed over 20 deer with it, and he is only 14 right now. It works everytime. I also really like the 308, have had one in one model or another for years. My last custom build was a 308 on a mauser action, and I've taken it from Wyoming where I killed two antelope, one at 450 yards, to Maine bear hunting. If I ever need anything bigger than a 308, I'll be needing something alot bigger.

I've been shopping around for 25-06's lately. Hard to decide on the brand of rifle. There's a lot of good ones out there.

I would go with the 270. Randan is right, you can find them & 30-06 anywhere. I also have to look at the shell cost now of days. I saw a different size today. I think he said a 204 maybe. He shoots deer on a quail place everyday. Gene

There are several WSM ( Winchester Short Magnum) calibers available that are versatile, if you like a short action although i think the ammo may be higher or harder to come by. I have a .270 and a .270 WSM but my wife has a .260 Remington that i really like too.

Thanks guys for all the input my nephew has a savage 110 in 270 he has killed around a dozen deer with it I have shot it before but just at jugs or cans at around 50 yards he claims along with my brother that the savage he has is more accurate than a model 70 winchester or remington 700 I have owned several hi powered rifles with intention of keeping them but have never keep one has any one had any dealing's with the savage axis that wall mart sell's they are 297.00 at my wall mart in all calibers I have heard some good things about them my local gun store allso has them for 299.00 he claims they are very similar to a 110 savage I don't want to dump a pile of money on a rifle and scope but want something reliable.

I have had several different rifles of all calibers in my life. Started witha .243 and killed proly fifty deer with it. A good shot is deadly on anything. I have owned .308. .270 wsm and up to .300 win mag. As far as a straight up deer rifle the .300 is great (eliminated tracking). The .270 wsm was the sorriest gun I have ever owned. Hard bullets pin holed (only two deer I ever lost) and the softer bullets would not exit if they hit anything hard ( hunted for down deer with no blood). The .308 is a great all around rifle to me if its good enough for snipers its good enough for me also never had one deer take a step after a 180 grain .308 hit. I also really like the savage for the money.
