IF YOU CAN FIND A RUGER 77 OLD MODEL,WITH THE SAFTEY THAT SLIDES FORWARD BEHIND THE BOLT GET IT, THEY WHERE MADE WITH A A DJUSTABLE TRIGGER THAT HAS A SET SCREW IN THE TRIGGER. THOMAS CHENNY HAD ONE FOR SELL ON HERE A WHILE BACK.THEY ARE VERY GOOD SHOOTING RIFLES, AN THEY COME WITH GOOD STURDY RINGS THAT CLAMP ONTO THE ACTION FOR A GOOD TIGHT FIT . THE TRIGGER WILL ADJUST DOWN TO ABOUT 2 POUNDS AN IS CRISP AN SWEET. I HAVE TAKEN MANY DEER AN A FEW COYTOES WITH MY 270.

I would suggest a ruger hawkeye m77 30-06 150. Grain corelokt bullets my ant has worked at remington for 30yrs test fireing ther rifle ammunition she says that the 30-06 150grain is the best ammo they produce out of all others rounds the 30-06 shoots the truest & I shoot that ammo & a ruger m77 is as good of gun u will buy n mho |

Tim, did you get the axis model? Rumor has it that savage is trying to phase out their Stevens model with the axis for their entry level or base rifle. The axis is a good looking rifle, just hate the idea of them doing away with the Stevens. |

GOT A TASCO WORLD CLASS ON ONE OF MY 270'S, HAVE TAKEN MANY DEER WITH IT.NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH IT.MAIN THING IS TO USE GOOD STURDY BASE AN RINGS.LIKE MY SCOPES AS CLOSE TO BARREL AS I CAN GET WITHOUT TOUCHING. THEY STAY SET BETTER THAT WAY.

With the rings I mounted it with a 50 would have touched the barrel the 3x9x40 is close to the barrel. TIM |

SOUNDS GOOD, I ZERO MINE IN AT 100 YDS,ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SIGHT IT IN AT 50YDS A 1/4 INCH LOW, IT WILL BE ZEROED AT 100,-0.8 AT 150, -2.8 AT 200YDS.OVER 200 YDS HOLD CROSS HAIR EVEN WITH BACKBONE AN YOU STILL GOT HIM PLUM OUT TO 300 YDS.I SHOOT 130 GRAIN BULLET. IT WILL TAKE ANYTHING IN NORTH AMERICA.

I like a 257 weatherby mag but it is expensive to shoot if you don't reload. The best ballistics on the market! Flat shooting and hard hitting round! More knockdown at 500yds than a 270 at 300yds with low recoil. That being said, a 22-250 and 308 are also shot here a lot. The 243 is a great round if loaded right. The Barnes TSX 85 grain does well in a 243. I have a 450 marlin and a 7mm mag for bigger stuff...lol. |

How about a 6.5x55 swede? My daughter has a sporterized mauser by Kimber, and it is deadly! She had a .243 but it didn't do well in the mountain laurel and brush. It really depends on the terrain you hunt. |
