Paul: I own a 6.5x55 sporterized mauser too. It is a heck of a gun with no recoil. I got it for my son, but I have used it more then my son. Gene.

Well the terrian here is mostly mtn.s ther are some places like where the have stripped mine you would get over 100 to 300 yard shot or maybe farther but in the wooded mtn.s 100 0r little more top's.

In these hills around our area, it's hard to beat a good lever gun....30-30 or 444 ! It's rare to get more than 75~100yd shot unless your on one of these big strip jobs. Here is a big 'Ol Buck George took with dad's 444 Marlin at close to 100yds -

I remember that hunt like it was yesterday, dad 444 shure dune the job. That was one of the biggest bodied deer i have ever seen, but when I pulled the trigger you would have thought he had been hit by a truck. :D

Jared, in my opinion, for everything fom coyote's to deer, the .270 is a great caliber. I've killed a few deer with a .270 I used to have. I have no experience with the WSM caliber's, but have heard good thing's abouy them. As far as just a deer caliber, it's hard to beat the trusty ol' .30-.30, especially in the area you and I live in. And the LEVERevolution cartridge's from Hornady are a great load for the .30-.30, and extend's it's range really good.

Shannon I would say that 30/30 has killed more deer for sure in my area than any other gun I have the 30/30 94 winchester that was my Dad's it is more of an air loom I think I will be pleased with my 270.

My .30-.30 is a Marlin 336, but those Winchester 94's are some very good gun's, I'd like to have one myself. A ..44 mag leveraction is also a good deer/hog gun in area's like this, and would be a fine black bear caliber when hunting with dog's, I imagine.

I have owned some marlin 336 I let them go but I love a lever gun. The 336 marlin is a good gun I know a guy in my area that has a 94 winchester made in 1902 their is a web sight you can google winchester 94 and type in the serial number and find out the year it was made.
