I have been shooting my old Browning Abolt 300 Win. Mag. for 25 years or maybe longer. I decided to put a new scope and a new trigger on it. I went to Simmons Sporting goods in Bastrop La. with it this evening. I layed it on the counter and told the gentleman that I wanted some trigger work done to it and he called the gun smith out. The gun smith looked at it and he said well I can tell you one thing about this gun that he was sure of. I asked whats that and he told me he knew that I really liked this gun alot. This was a puzzle to me because I hadn't opened my mouth about it other than I told the salesman that I wanted a new after market trigger for it. I ask how he knew this and he told me anytime a man brings a gun in there that he has owned for 25 yrs. with no blueing left on it plus it looked like it had been in ww II had to like this gun or I would have done got rid of it years ago and he was very right. I left it with him and he has ordered some trick trigger parts for it plus I bought a new scope for it. I got 3X12X56 Zeiss with a 30 mm tube. I have wanted a Zeiss for a long time but always talked myself out of it when it come time to get it. When you get to where you don't see real good no longer espeacially right at dark when the big ones come out you have to up grade things. New glass's didn't help that much but I think this new scope will get me by for a couple more years now. Be sides Laree bought a new bed today and I"m just trying to get even with her...........Big Ronnie |

I have had a few that fill the bill. I'm funny about my guns and if they don't do the job like I want and please me then there out of here. But now a gun that pleases me and feels right and does a good job will stay with me forever. I'm talking about one like this gun. I've had this one for many years and I know there is many new guns that have come out since my old gun but I wouldn't trade it for none of them. It would take a freight train to haul the deer I have killed with this gun............Big Ronnie |

I finely got the call about my gun telling me they were through with it. I managed to get it picked up but have not shot it yet but boy can I see with this new Zeiss scope. When I carried it to the gun shop and left it we had agreed on a new trigger, some barrel work with some stock work. The same day I talked scopes with them and we agreed on a 3x12x56 conquest Zeiss scope because of the great light gathering abbility it had late in the evening and at dusk dark. They tried to sell me on the (Duralyt model) 3x12x56 Zeiss but this one was out of my reach. The Duralyt model is what is called 100% german made with much better glass in it and a much more price on it also. I looked at it hard and man what a scope it was. It took only a few seconds though for me to figure out that this Duralyt model was completely out of the ball park that I was used to playing in. I went with the Conquest Zeiss model in the 3x12x56 which is a good scope it's self and payed for it the day I left my gun with them to be worked on. Friday when I went to pickup my gun around 2 months later I had them to mount and bore sight the ConQuest model scope on the gun. Dureing the bore sighting part I noticed he was haveing trouble with the new scope as in it wasn't adjusting like it was supposed to. The verticle adjustment wasn't moveing up and down. They told me it had something wrong inside but not to worry because they were going to go in the back and get another one. After a few minutes they returned with a puzzled look on their face and said they didn't have another one and also that it would be a while before they could get one in. They told me the only thing they had close to it was the Duralyt model but it was much more money. About this time the OWNER of the big sporting good store came over and looked at the non working scope and he had the new Duralyt 100% german made scope in his hand. He told me that this scope was the same that he used and the most important thing to him was a satisfied customer. He told them to install it on my rifle and for me to tell everyone how much I liked it and where i got it from. So folks let me tell all of you (I LIKE IT) and I really mean this. You might go to places and get a little cheaper price on things but when trouble ocurrs you can't beat a good respectable sporting good store that stands behind their products 100% or should I say almost 150%. These scopes also have a non fault lifetime warranty with them. They done a awesum job with my trigger also. I'm talking about awesum!!! Anyone looking for a great sporting good store in the south try Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop La. Their just great people to deal with. Machelle is already trying to figure out a way to con me out of it. Her last approach was (daddy when your gone as in aien't gonna have no need for it where your at can I have it then). You bet you she can. Besides theres not many daughters that shoots 300 mags. and likes them ............Big RonnieIt don't look like it's 25 years old (NO MORE) like it did when I carried it to them. ![]() ![]() Edited by Big Ronnie, Sep 16 2012, 07:20 PM.

I carried it with me to the camp this last weekend and got to shoot it some. I have shot Remington 150 gr. coreloke in it for years but I am trying a new bullet. I'm trying a Hornady Custom (Superformance) in a 150 gr. boat tail. According to the ballistic books it has a little over 200 energy ft. lbs. and drops less at longer distances. This is yet to be seen but it sounds good. The new trigger is alot better than the old trigger was. I believe it is a Brownell and not very expensive. I have a rail built around the front porch at the camp with a target out in front that we shoot sometimes when needed. The rail is built up high enough that we shoot from it. Late saturday evening I gave it a whirl and shot some of the Remingtons in it at first. Needed to shoot several rounds thru it to season the barrel back in. After a few rounds of the regular bullets and a cold coors or two I decided to try the Custom Hornady Superformances (WOW). When I eased off the first round while setting on the front porch I thought it had knocked the camper and porch off its blocks. I know it knocked my block off. Much more hotter round and much more kick. It got dark on me pretty quick and didn't get to shoot but a few more of them (thank goodness). I noticed that the Zeiss seemed to really gather light at dusk dark. I'll shoot it some more this next weekend..............Big Ronnie |

I have had really good luck with the older light magnums in my .270 Win. It launched a 140 gr. at over 3000 from the 22 inch barrel according to my Ohler 33. As long as I let the barrel cool between shots, it shot 1/2 inch groups from my stock A Bolt. When I say cool, I mean stone cold between shots. The first shot usually comes from a cold barrel so thats how I sight it in. 3 inches high at 100 yards and I have a point blank sight in out to about 330 yards or so. BR, me and my boys are looking forward to some pictures of what you bag down in the swamp this year. Catfish Edited by Catfish, Sep 25 2012, 10:50 PM.
