I assume you've decided the litter you want a pup from, that's the important part.
Then I honestly believe somehow the RIGHT pup will pick you. When someone wants a pup from here
I put a 5 gallon pail in the puppy yard, have the person just sit there, all the pups will ask for your attention but after a short while there will be one that has PICKED you,
When I'm picking a pup from my own litter I notice which pup is usually the first to know you're coming to feed and if that pup has it's feet up on the wire and barks first, I pay close attention to it,
After a few weeks old I try to sneak up on them with feed, the first pup that smells me coming gets my attention, usually it's the same pup, decision made.

I agree. The way they act one or two will really stand out. When I got max. He was the one that was paying the most attention to the roll cage. Him and his brother went to the woods with us that night for the first time in the dark and they were pretty brave. Before I got home in the morning I was back on the phone making arrangements to go back and get him. I had a 1 hr drive to really think about him. And I just felt like I needed him. He has made me proud several times in the couple months I have owned him. Everyone has an idea what they are looking for in a dog. And even as pups and young dogs you can see that in them. I wouldn't want a pup that is laying there sleeping while all the other pups are trying to get my attention. I also think about how I think the pup will fit in with my other dogs. I have a 3 yr old daughter so I wouldn't want one that is just plum crazy acting. But a couple of my pups I wasn't even looking for another but they just caught my eye. Didn't get them at that time but when I couldn't stop thinking about them I went back and got them. One of them I thought about for a couple weeks. So basically I guess I'm saying I just get a feeling in my gut when I see that special one.

Good post Mr Dave and Josh! Usually one or more pups will catch your eye!!

For 20 + years, I have usually kept the pup that was picked over and had good results. I never have picked a pup and told folks that they could have any pup in the litter but that one because I was keeping him. That is usually the one they will want. However, this last litter I did breed for a brindle female and had one brindle pups out of 7 so that was easy and pre determined!

I usually say to someone when asked how to pick a pup to "PICK TH PARENTS AND GRAB A PUP"!! That usually works!! ;)

Hopefully the hunting genetics is their from the right parents. However, every pup is an individual and has its own personallity just like you and I. It is usually those personallities that match up with their future master!! :)

Good luck!!

One thing I didn't mention is, if all else fails and I can't really get a handle on just one pup I'll pick
the pup that most resembles the sire or dam that has impressed me. If a pup has the same color or
other trait there's a good chance it will have the same traits in the woods. If I know nothing of either parent, I'm not even there. If the whole litter isn't sharp and very active I don't want one from that litter, they all carry the same blood. Someday I'll want to raise pups from my pick and there's no way
I'll breed to anything that I know carries a bad trait.

my answer was alittle short, but to the point. Blood line is a must, what I mean by this is a true producing blood line, and or strain. Good acting pups are good too, but what if they have not been handled correctly, or socialized like they need to be. You will hear alot of really good advise here and it will all help you to understand alot about these dogs. The one thing I would say other than my first statment is (and this is the very hard part) hunt with many different dogs, and breeders, hunt in bad conditions, and good ones. Hunt Hunt Hunt with all kinds of dogs before you make your purchase, remember i said it would be hard, and time cosuming. Like Hank Jr. said in one of his songs"Don't fire on the first one" Good luck my friend.

The reason I asked this question is because I like all my pups and they all like me. It is gonna be hard for me to decide which one I want for myself. I guess I might just keep the one that is not sold.
