I have a 4 year old that is now my oldest dog due to losing my older dogs this past summer . She has never had to be at the front of a trail more like just ran with the older dogs to get to the hog but this past six months I've had to rely on her to strike up and find hogs but she won't stay on a runner very long if she hasn't got a dog with her my pups are getting better but still not making them long runs when I get on one that what's to run. So how do I get that old dog to stick with them hogs that want to run I've found bout 20 hogs with her but I've lost bout 12 so far cause she will come back off a bay if the pups strike up while coming to her is there any way to help her stay put |

Some dogs get used to other dogs striking we have kemmers too we use them on squirrel and coon we carry the young dogs with us as soon as they start treeing we single them out so they will get use to doing there own thing I have had dogs that's been hunted with others and want tree alone but will when other dogs tree we call them me too dogs or cheerleaders If I was a hog hunter I would rotate the young dogs and give them all a chance to be lead dog just my opion |

Like Tracy said dog learn what you teach them most of the time a puppy starts out going to the lead dog or the dog that found the game. The dog that will not stay bayed and run the hog very long might start but most will not at that age. When i put a young dog out and he or she comes back i put them in the truck i do not let them hang around me or the truck and play them days are over when i start hauling them hunting. Some times i may ride all day just to find a hog that the youngs can run. Some time all i take hunting is young dogs they have to start some were most hunters want to catch hog and not spend time with puppys and when you loose your trained dogs this is what happens. If it was me i would put one young dog out with the four year old dog and see what happens. Hope this helps i have been down that road and it is hard to over come and build a pack back. |
